Can I put an extra fan on my new Volcano II ... how ?

I just asked this question here ... but this seems to be a more appropriate forum.

I would like to put an extra fan on my newly installed ThermalTake Volcano II heat sink (on a Duron 800@1017), because the stock fan on the heatsink doesn't seem to be pushing sufficient air. Can I put an extra fan on top of the existing one ? If so, can someone tell me how exactly to do so. If there is a guide somewhere I would love to have a pointer.

I would also appreciate suggestions on which fans (i.e. size, brand etc.) will be good to use for this purpose.

If it is not possible ot put an extra fan, can I at least replace the existing one ? Which fan would be a good replacement (size and make) ?

I am not much bothered by fan noise, so a loud but good fan will work just fine for me.

Hmmmm, afaik. an extra of same size and brand only gives approximately 10-15% extra airflow.

You could try to put a smaller (i.e. thinner) 60 mm fan ontop and see how much that helps the aitflow of the existing fan. The air from the smaller fan should help the large one with less "friction" from the air. You follow?

Maybe putting a 7K rpm Delta fan on top? ;)

These are all guesses, no need to flame me, okay?

When coming to the question about mounting it. For testing purposes cable-/zipties skould be efficient.
For a permanent solution you could use super glue or 4 mm Phillips machine screws with modified head (The standard head is too big)

Am i just babbling? I think I am, but wht the heck!?!?

Better yet, I've read in other forums where people have attached fans to the side of the heatsink with good results. I'm going to try that myself when I build another system during the next week or so.

At 1000 MHz you hardly need any mods, don't waist your time, Volcano is pretty decent cooler for this speed...

Ehmm doesn't the stock fan on a Volcano II puch 36 CFM? It says so here in the specs I got for it on my wholesalers webshop. It this a typo? If not I think that 36 CFM would be enough for a 1Ghz Duron anytime. Especially with the Volcano II heatsink that looks to be pretty decent heatsink.

No way in hell is it 36cfm. It is a "typo". Shame that Thermaltake is taking a leisurely time correcting that "typo".

<< Don't quote me, but I heard it was somewhere around 26-27 CFM. >>

Hehe well, I'm quoting you anyway :)
26 CFM does make sence though, it's easy to hit the 3 instead of the 2 isn't it? Well, 26 CFM is no to bad though. Better than the "standard" 21 CFM that a whole lof of heatsink/fan combos got as default.

Hmmm, I'm pretty sure it is actually 36 CFM. That fan's supposed to be a very sharp competitor to Delta's Black Label fan... It's less noisy!

I'm almost certain I've read other ppl talk about this fan... Somewhere.

Nope, measure it. You'll find it's around 21CFM. It's disappointing that Thermaltake is so disreputable when it comes to their products. First the orbs, now this.

On the plus side, I find that the Volcano II is quieter than say a FOP32, and cools about the same. Despite my criticisms of their marketing, I am running one, and am generally pleased with it.

I also own a VolcanoII..

If I was to mount a fan on to the side of it, what direction should the fan go ? Blowing into the heatsink, or away from the heatsink ?

thanks,

Jaybittle: In my humble opinion that depends on the existing fan's direction..

If the existing fan is blowing air onto the heatsink the extra fan should suck that air away including "fresh" cold air from the other side away. The best would be to suck it upwards in the cabinet, sucking the cold air from the bottom of the cabinet. That's only possible if the fins on the heatsink are vertical. :)

Any other opinions?

I think this is important to all owning Volcano 2. I just did some experimenting by putting one 60x15 fan from Global Win and I got consistently 5C lower temps under full load. It was blowing air from behind of the Volcano towards the north bridge. Really makes difference...

The 2coolTek.com description page for the Volcano II also claims that the airflow feels in the 23-27 CFM range.
