i currently have a pny 7800gt and i am looking to get another 7800gt for a good sli rig. i believe i can mix manufactures as long as they have the same core but i am wondering if a say get a 7800gt co i believe i will have to match the core speed and memory to the lowest value that they are stable at. my pny does 454/1154 which isnt great but still about 10% over stock.

also will different bios cause problems?

You can use different brands with different BIOSes, they just have to have the same core. As for clock speeds, yes, they have to match exactly for SLI to work. You can downclock the 7800GT CO if your PNY can't match the COs speeds.

The clock speeds DO NOT have to match exactly for SLI to work. The faster card will just automatically downclock to the slower card.

i think actually from what i've read, you need to put the slower clocked card into the first pci-e slot that is nearer to the cpu.

then the 2nd card will just take whatever settnigs the first ones' bios has.
