Can I make an Xbox into a HTPC?

btw, can still play xbox games

what are the things needed?
Do i have to change the program in it?

I believe so. I don't know for certain about internet radio but I know you can do the rest of the things as I have. You'll need to mod it with a mod chip though.

softmods are way easier and cheaper than modchips. and i see no real appreciable difference in function other than the switch for live.

I'm actually buying another xbox just to mod. And personally I think Xbox Media Center is the way to go. Though this will be a hard mod.

You'll also want a new Harddrive and DVD drive (will save you lots of heartache)

This is incorrect. You can softmod with a usb flash drive and a easy-to-make cable.

second a new dashboard like EvoX or Avalaunch . . . etc

(if you're lazy, go download slayer's evox package. you don't need to edit anything and it'll install all the media players / software you'll probably need)

XBMC will allow you to do everything you asked. It will do streaming internet radio, play movies (with much more control over the movie format than any other DVD player I've user used I might add), play games from the hard drive, play arcade games you own with MAMEoX, play games from past game systems (Genesis, SNES, etc.). Simply put, yes, but I recommend XBMC to perform all these functions.

how i did it- get 007 Agent under Fire
get the 007 hacked savegame with evox. (you need to go to #xbins on efnet, /msg xbins !list, connect to the ftp server)
I got a MegaXkey (megaxkey.com), xbox/usb memory stick and loaded the gamesave, this gives you ftp access to the xbox hdd
then go to the xbins ftp server and go to the xbox/exploits/packages/ folder and get the UDE package exploit, backup your xbox c drive then wipe it out/replace with this package via ftp after you read the readme and run a couple batch files on your pc. reboot xbox.
enjoy running unsigned code

doesn't work with recent Live dashboard updates... I've tried the mechassault exploit and found Live had just updated my dash right before I tried the exploit out. I would downgrade my dash, but for some reason I couldn't ftp into my xbox.

This was a few months ago when I tried, so the groups might have released new keys, but as far as I know the easy softmod is no more if you use Live frequently. Somtimes it sucks to play together

Thanks, but with all those said, will an xbox have a surround sound capability to play 5.1 channels on my reciever. i know xbox doesn't have a s/pdif or digital coaxial cable connection. does it havea converter to play that??

Yes, you can have optical out. You need the advanced AV kit (i think thats what they call it) It gives you optical and S-Video out. You can get it at pretty much any best buy.

But the BIOS isn't called EvoX. They make one called M8 (the only one I know of, I'm sure there are probably others now, they were the first out of the gate for 1.6 support). The dashboard is called EvoX and the guy probably just got confused.

this has been covered a bunch of times, but yes you will stil be able to go on Live, just with the right precautions.

Mod Chip, High Def Pack and you should be set to stream media.

to store games, emulators and random stuff, recommend a new hard drive as well. :thumbsup:

To my knowledge, the actual name for the BIOS is Evox, and the version is M8, which stands for "Multi" (as in multiple versions of the xbox are supported). Older versions of the bios were called Evox 2.4, 2.5, etc.
