Can i limit steams download limit?

Can i stop it from hogging all the bandwidth? Or does it smartly take only what is available?

I live with other people and i dont want it to lag their games etc if steam is updating.

AFAIK, there's no way of limiting it other than pausing the download/update.

you could probably do what you want to do using a 3rd party app like netlimiter

i've downloaded stuff on steam while my cousin was playing warcraft 3. He didn't experience any extra lag from it. Although, this may be because warcraft 3 and many other games really don't use much bandwidth. Mainly in my experience its only torrenting/streaming that causes lag while gaming.

The above probably doesn't apply to mmorpgs though.
