Can I legally do this?

I just got a new Asus 1201N laptop that has Windows 7 home premium installed.

It has a restore disc but has all the crapware that comes installed with the laptop by default.

I want to be able to format the drive, create 1 maybe two partitions with x64 windows 7 home premium

And use my cd key on the laptop to reinstall?

my goal would be to eventually upgrade to 4 gb's of RAM as well.

Any advice is appreciated...

Yes, I don't know if the cd-key will work with a standard Windows 7 disc or if its a vendor restore disc centric key though. I imagine its legal as it is what you payed for.

I did this with a compaq laptop.

You have to use the OEM DVD of Windows 7 Home Premium to reinstall. The serial on your sticker should work, though you might have to phone in for activation.

It should work. Has worked on a few laptops i have tried it with. I used full retail disks. Though this was with vista. And on dells.

I did actually try that decrapifier and it only removed about 10% of what I wanted off...

For instance, it didn't remove Office 2007 trial or the 10 different language packs associated with it.

Also, all the drivers were out of date which again is a PITA to uninstall and reinstall all that stuff, and who really knows if it actually removes everything.

Was this compaq laptop recently? Did you have to 're-activate' the key once you did the re-install? If so did you have any issues with the key after doing the re-install?

Did that on my Acer. You will only be able to activate it by phone. (When you try to activate over the net it will say invalid key)

I have done that with about 4 laptops, the only one which didn't work was the HP DV7. Over the phone I was told that its an invalid key. It was Vista HP so I didn't really care as I already had Win7 free upgrade coming.
