Can i leave my volcano 6cu unplugged on xp1800 cpu?

You are asking for trouble by doing so. Unless you have a shroud to defer the heat, i wouldn't risk it. Purchase a panaflo fan.
 
I doubt it. You would need a monster heatsink to dissipate like 50W without a fan..

You won't hurt anything trying, though. Unplug it, and watch your temp.

It will probably just keep going higher and higher until your system crashes. Maybe not though. Probably depends a lot on the airflow in your case.
 
i had a delta die on my sk-6 n my tbird 1.4, the system would start to boot and then crash out before windows got done loading, took me awhile to figure it out because i cn't hear the delta over the 2 sunon 120s and my case itself kills noise pretty well
it did leave an image burned into the bottom of the sk-6 though.. that little square design thingy in the corner of the core..still fully functional though
point is, get a panaflo or other quieter fan for it, you'll have no stability with passive cooling and that hsf
 
I just pasted the following off the AMD website:

nemo160: howd you get about doing this? 🙂 am in the process of modding my case and am looking for all the tips i can get. 🙂
 
You can get a 5000rpm version of the fan which is pretty quiet.

Otherwise just buy a whisper fan that runs in the 5000rpm range.
 
http://www.directron.com/silence.html has a good selection of quiet fans that really work. Just replace the fan itself with one of these. I'm getting a couple of case fans, and a cpu fan for that same cpu cooler (as well as the same cpu) from them sometime this week (UPS willing) and I'll let you know how it sounds when I get it all set up, if you're interested. But the fans came highly recommended from a friend of mine who wanted a quiet pc.
