Can I lacquer over lacquer?

For instance, lacquering over a piece of IKEA furniture that is already lacquered (I want to go from white to dark brown or black)... Is it easy, or do they put some sort of top coat on that needs to be stripped?

lightly sand it first.

If you know for sure thats lacquer, yes you can. Lightly sand with a 220 grit sanding pad. Dont be to rough, you just want to scuff the surface a little bit before top coating it.

Awesome. Is lacquer thick enough that i'll only need one coat, or should I plan on muliple coats? (It is going from white to dark) Will i need to lightly sand between each coat?

It's always good to apply multiple thin coats.
