Can I just upgrade my video card?

Here's my set up right now.

A64 3000+ @ 2.7ghz
DFI Lanparty nf4 ultra
Western Digital 600gb
ATI Radeon x800xl
EMU 1212m
4 x 512mb OCZ Gold memory

I want to be able to play the latest games at full blast graphics and was wondering if I can just upgrade my video card or do I need an entirely new build. The biggest problem I see is that my motherboard doesn't support 4gb of memory.

Nope. You need a completely new system.

upgrading your card would net a performance gain for sure, but you're not gonna play the latest stuff at max detail.

you could look into the e5200+mobo deal for $100 (or something similar) or you could just upgrade the card and wait on the proc. but don't expect top end performance.

A Radeon HD 4770 would give you a nice little bump 😀 for around $100.

Should even work well with your current PSU (if it's as good as the rest of your components).

'Full Blast' would be relative to your resolution and the games you play ...

You can upgrade the video card but those that can handle the latest and greatest games will be hindered by the perfromance of that CPU. We are now 2 full socket generation beond 939 so its time for a new system build.

Now it should be known that i am running 2 939 systems but i have no need for an upgrade right now and they both have a dual core CPU in them. One is a 3800 X2 with 1Gb of RAM and the other is an Opti 165 @ 2.9 GHz with 2GB of RAM. Now a bisic video card upgrade would be a good thing in my case since my CPUs are not going to hinder the card all that much. But right now my 7900GS in the faster system is doing me just fine.
