Hello,

I want to buy an SSD and motherboard. Can I install SSD PCI-E Gen3 x4 M.2 2280 on the motherboard that has M.2 2280 (PCIe 4.0 x4 mode)?

for example, MB is: ASUS PRIME B660M-A WIFI D4 and SSD is Samsung 980 NVMe M.2

Thanks

Absolutely. I have one X4 running at 4.0, one X4 running at 3.0, and one
X3 running at 3.0...all on the same board.

I had gen4 GPU on gen3 slot and now it is on gen5 slot. Both ok. (Also a gen4 NVMe on gen5 M.2.)
Both slots and devices are backward compatible; they negotiate gen and channels that both can support.

I've been tossing nvme drives willy nilly, without regard to the generation or number of lanes. It always works, so far. Naturally, it only runs at the speed of the whichever connected circuit is slowest. The NVME people seem to have gotten the compatibility specs down right. Not nearly the huge mess that is USB :)
