I'm having problems with my USB 2 ports on my P4PE. I have a Seagate File Free Agent Pro USB drive that worked for a couple of weeks and then stopped working (details below) on my P4PE (it works fine on another computer). Also, when I connect my digital camera to the P4PE it sporadically disconnects and then connects. I would like to purchase a USB 2 PCI card with 4-5 ports and "deactivate" the USB ports on my motherboard ( I assume that you would deactivate the USB ports via the bios). I?m running XP SP2 with all of the latest patches installed via auto update. I have 1 gig of RAM.
Questions:
1. Can you install a PCI USB 2 card in a P4PE and will it work with external drives?
2. If it will work do you have to "de-activate" the USB ports in the Motherboard via the BIOS?
3. If it works any recommendations for PCI USB cards? I has read that the ones with the NEC chipset work better than the ones with the VIA chipset.
Please note that I spent 6+ hours on the net researching USB 2 problems with the P4PE. Multiple users reported the same disconnect and connect issues that I had. I tried all of the ?fixes? like go into the program manager and delete and then re-acquire the USB devices. Program Manager reports that I have a ?USB 2.0 enhanced host controller ? 24CD. None of these things worked.
Here?s another factor that might be related. I have 8-9 existing drive letter assignments:
* C: & D: are the same IDE drive
* E is a logical CD ? DVD drive created by Magic ISO which will mount computer files as a virtual DVD drive
* F: is an IDE drive connected to the P4PE raid controller
* G: is the drive letter that gets assigned when the external drive is connected (doesn?t work reliably any more).
* L: is an IDE DVD ? CD reader
* S: is a IDE DVD ? CD read writer
* X: & Y: are two partitions on an internal IDE drive.
* Z: is a third partition on the same IDE drive C: and D: are on.
Description of existing USB 2 problems
I. If I connect a digital camera the camera is detected for a while then disconnects and then connects again. This has been happening for several months.
II. I had connected an external drive a Seagate Free Agent Pro. It partially worked for a couple of weeks: I could copy and retrieve stuff from it but it would periodically disconnect and connect. I looked in the Event Log's System report and found different error messages:
1. "An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk3\D during a paging operation."
2. {Delayed Write Failed} Windows was unable to save all the data for the file . The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere?.
3. ?The system failed to flush data to the transaction log. Corruption may occur.?
4. ?The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume G:.? I had to attach my external drive to another PC and ran chckdsk which fixed the problem. I reconnected the external drive to the P4PE and it seemed to work for 20 seconds (it was detected, then disconnected).
I have connected the external drive to another computer and it works perfectly. No messages in the event log.
Any help would be appreciated.
