I currently have a tiny home network consisting of two PCs connected via a special CAT-5 cable (rrrg, forgot the name--d-something). I'm about to get DSL, so I'll have to plug that into my current NIC (3Com 905TX). Can I install another NIC (3Com 509) so I can remain connected to my other PC?

You sure can, but if you want to share the dsl connection, consider one of these routers intended for DSL/cable sharing.

You can get one in the $100 range. You won't have to take your machine apart to add a second NIC and you will be able to share the connection with both machines without running any special software on either of them. Also, neither of the machines will be dependent on the other being on for a network connection.

I just got one and I got it working in <10 minutes.

You certainly can use two NICS in one computer. In fact, it is necessary if your are running a gateway/proxy server so a single modem can be used by any client on your network. One NIC connects to the cable modem and the other NIC connects to your hub.

I was doing just this until a few days ago. I had one computer (450 Mhz PII) running Windows 98 SE ICS (Internet Connection Sharing). It worked great. A few days ago I replaced the gateway computer with a Linksys Router. This little Black (and blue) box (< $150.00) that makes no noise, takes up little if any space, uses inconsequential power, and requires no monitor/keyboard/mouse/etc., replaced an entire computer. It also works great and to my suprise, was effortless to set up and get running. A true no brainer.
