Gameplay on my pooder is excellent but DVD playback is less than perfect: clear foreground images but swimmy background images, less than crystal clear colors, etc. Is there some kind of setup I'm missing? Any suggestions at all?

FYI:
nVidia 8600GT 256 memory
Samsung SyncMaster 930a LCD
M-Audio Revolution sound card
2.0 Ghz Intel CPU
ECS mobo
2 GB RAM
XP

Thanks in advance for your help!

i'm thinking swimmy background is b/c its a hardware limitation of the lcd. vga might have something to do with not-so-great colors.

You didn't mention the DVD player and DVD codec that you're using. XP doesn't come with a DVD codec, so you have to rely on a 3rd party player and codec. Try another?

Player-wise, I generally use WinDVD 5 -- if that's what you mean. However, I'm not sure what you mean by the DVD codec. By trying another, do you mean a different player, e.g., PowerDVD? Or are you referring to something else?

Thanks!

Try downloading MPC-HC (Media Player Classic Home Cinema), and configure it to use VMR9, and see if that doesn't look better.
