Can I get a New GTS/GT/3870??

While obviously a faster CPU will help your FPS, I don't think with such a rig it would be a "wasted purchase" to get a new video card.
I believe you will get a good performance boost out of it... My cutoff is a P4 / athlonXP... either one of those and you should upgrade your whole system rather then buying a new video card.
 
That opteron is a real bottleneck. I believe that you would waste these powerful GPU's performance on this CPU. You should really invest in changing it.

You probably need all the gfx power you can get: get the fastest card you can afford first, and afterwards you can consider whether you need an extra core (same socket) or a platform upgrade to Core2.

 
I have an Opteron 165 at 2.5 and upgraded from an 1900XT to an 8800GT and it helps tremendously in all the games I currently play:

WIC
COD4
M2TW
COH

I can run all of these t 1920x1200 with max settings. Since you are at a higher rez, you will be more GPU than CPU limited.

Now, would I be getting even better frames with a Core2? Absolutely. Was the upgrade still worth it? You bet your ass it was.

Probably would see better frames, though if your at 45+ FPS (30 is plenty playable) for most of those games, I would wait until you more games come out because hardware will improve. Guess it depends on how you want to play the game.

How big is the Difference From single core to dual core. as in 144 to 165

Which games are dual core optimized?

Just upgrade from my Neo2 Platinum AGP board + X1950Pro 512 to

Asus A8N32 Sli Deluxe + Asus HD3870


At my Native 1680x1050 Crysis @ Med on the AGP card 20-25 on avg

.... Still need to check the FPS on new card but it feels alot better!

I'm not looking to play crysis. I just want to run my older games at 2560x1600. Like bf2142 ,,
 
That I know that use two cores currently.

Bioshock
Crysis
Supreme Commander
New Medal of Honor game

Most games coming out in 08 will support dual cores and I would say some of the games that came out in the later half of 07 do also.

Ok, So From single to Dual core I can expect what % increase in those games. say Opteron dual core @ 2.7ghz+

I also have 2 gig ram, and idk what else to list
 
In games, it will help, to what extent, I do not know because I haven't read up on that subject.

However, in a standpoint of general computer "quickness" and efficiency, especially whilst multi-tasking, a dual core will be a GREAT help, and this is someone coming from a crap Pentium 4 to a Core 2 Duo.

Umm.. That may be a sway of just MORE proc power in general versus ur experience in Multitasking.
 
Going from a P4 @ 3.75 to an opty 165 @ 2.7, I can say right away that there's a HUGE difference in almost every respect...

P4s were rubbish. Intel marketed the whole "Megahertz Myth" to trick buyers into buying their inferior product, as opposed to AMD's better processors at the time.

I was unfortunately one of those noobs who fell for it, believe me, after being on a P4 2.4 GHz (mind as well be called 1GHz from the way it "felt"), and testing out some dual-core systems (not Core 2 Duo, but Pentium D), the difference is huge. I attribute a lot of the quicker speeds and multitasking efficiency to being dual core rather than clocks, though it'd undoubtedly wouldn't hurt to have a generally faster processor, however.
