Really? He's getting rid of deductibles?

Urgent care is not open at midnight - 6AM or so.

GF had really bad back pains, went to ER, waited 5 hours, saw doctor, cost 980$~ she was prescribed Vicodin ... PITA. Even with insurance, costly rape ensued.

Its a waste of time and money to go to the ER for back pain.

Unless the back pain ends up being a AAA, acute pancreatitis, ruptured peptic ulcer, or MI - that said, I would hope most people, in most cases, could determine the severity.

Ah, so a human being is like a car where you perform maintenance and nothing bad will ever happen to it?

Helps if you're Asian too. Just like Japanese cars tend to have less problems than their American and European counter parts.

a few months ago i went to the ER for back pain. after waiting a few hours, i'm taken to the back, seen for about 2 minutes, and discharged. the doc didn't examine me, just assumed it was muscle spasms, and prescribed painkillers. the bill arrives and its not itemized or anything.

i plan to call and complain. why can't they itemize and let estimate what i may owe before taking me in? i would've been better off just suffering through the pain. how should i approach this?

Next time go to urgent care. Emergency services cost money.

Justify what value was provided for that amount of money. You can't. Health care has become quite the rip off in many ways and there are many to blame but the government trying to control things is the root cause. Insurance is as much the problem and not the answer in any way.

His care wasn't worth $800. His access to emergency care was what cost him the $800. Having a staffed and equipped emergency room was what his $800 bought. That he didn't need the level of care that an emergency room can provide doesn't lessen the cost of access. Basically, he clogged up a system not designed to his needs and is being asked to pay the price of that access.

What the hell are these "urgent care centers"?

I've made an urgent care appt with my doc, but it required a call first thing in the morning when they opened to make the appt or I was out of luck until the next day.

Wouldn't that defeat the purpose though?

"I'm having a heart attack!"
"Ok let me see here... ok, how's Tuesday at 8:30, if that's too early we can maybe fit you in at 10:00."

Urgent care is a separate facility...you walk in just like an ER. It's designed for those that aren't in immediate danger of dying.

Ohh so kinda like a walk in clinic. We have one here too, but it has the weirdest hours ever, and the doctor only shows up like 4 hours after it opened. I wish the hospital ER would have a separate clinic for the non urgent stuff. So many people go to the ER for silly stuff, but there's no where else in town to go if the walk in clinic is closed. Guess that's what we get for free health care. :p

Urgent care cost the same as an ER visit for me, and is only available from 10 to 2 on Saturday and Sunday. If you have a problem but cannot see your doctor you do NOT go to urgent care, they tell you to go to the EMERGENCY ROOM.

If you are in risk if going blind, or loosing a limb, you shouldn't wait to see your doctor a day later. You should go to the ER, the ER is for all emergencies not just life threatening ones.

Maybe where you go but your blanket experiences do not cover everyone and I have had to make frequent use of Urgent care. Without going into long details I use Urgent care about 1-2 times a year. My visits HAVE ALWAYS been cheaper than an ER. Honestly - your post sounds like bad advice

The ones around here are often open 10-6 on weekends and until 8pm on weekdays making them a great intermediate option between a doctors visit and an ER visit

Dude you are making up lies, especially were doctors only advise you to go to the ER.

I live in California. There are UC centers near me, but the insurance will not cover it, unless it part of the network. There are no in network UC centers for me that is open on weekdays.

So if you are loosing your eye sight, or you cannot walk anymore, you would wait until the next morning, call your doctor and make an appointment?

You don't get it, I don't have any UCs in my network that are open on weekdays, only on weekends, for 10 to 2. I could switch to a different network that has UCs centers everyday, but I like the network I am in.

My Copay for ER is $50, my Copay for UC is $50. Same price.

on a side note, when i was at the ER for a DVT there was a woman in front of me who was there because she had tooth pain for a year and finally couldn't handle it. i thought that was amusing.

also, my doctor told me at 2am to go to the ER immediately, so yeah.

on another side note, my ER copay went up to 100 bucks. that blows. urgent care is only 50, but they aren't usually open at 2am. or worth a damn.

I have a few urgent care centers close to open all the time

Kind of like er lite. If you are sick but can't go to doctor you go to urgent care. One time wife and I had strep and we went. Another time I was going to take one of my kids because his doctor was out of town to a conference.

e) Forget Obamacare, you're already paying for all the people that can't pay.

Bingo.

What Obama shoulda done was investigate where all that money actually goes. THAT would definitely help to reduce the cost of healthcare. As opposed to just dumping more money on the problem which is all insurance really does.

Same here. I've been to PatientFirst (mid-Atlantic chain of pretty good urgent care centers) three times. Once was for a broken ankle, once for a broken shoulder and once for a pretty nasty infection. I paid MUCH less than I would have for an ER visit (I think the co-pay was 1/3rd of the cost of an ER trip. If I hadn't had insurance the out of pocket cost would have been something like $150 or $200) and received good and prompt care. ERs are horrible, I will never go there unless I'm in danger of losing life or limb.
