The stupidest part is that they look over a receipt of mine that has like 200 items and they look at the the grocery cart(s) like they are some kinda super human scanning machine that can I.D an aberrant purchase in amongst all my stuff.
Yep she did that to me today and we had like 25 items in there.

I have never been asked at Walmart and I go there every week.

Skoorb, you need to relax. I am sure it was nothing personal, maybe she was just checking every 10 customers that walk out or something. Best Buy seems to target the ... minorities. They have always stopped me ( I am Indian) to ask for the receipt. I give them a dirty look and mutter "damn white people" hehe sometimes gets them angry.

But when people go out the door with the alarm going off they dont do anything either. Even if they did pay and the alarm goes off, doesnt that mean they have to demagitize something??

That stuff doesn't work too well and we never used to check that anyway... but then agan, I was a cashier and not a door guy.. I truly hated that job... I mean, the work itself isn't so bad and I loved how there was such a huge group of teenagers that were employees so there would be at least SOME people to hang out with..

I just hated the customers... .. oh wait.. I hate price checks too.

at our walmart, i think they are just racist. you see three or four caucasians walk out the door, doesn't matter what they look like, the lady/guy just stands around. the instant we start headin for the door, it's a mad rush to stop us. and when the security thing goes off when two-three ppl walk out.. i see the minority get held back. hrmm. yeah. sure. whenever the alarm goes off for me at walmart, i just keep walking. i have my receipt, i've paid for everything. they need to fix the security devices. altho, i feel bad for the ppl behind me, as they are the ones that get stopped.. and they haven't even gotten to the door... good ol walmart employees.

Oh, and your Main Street Business pays better that WalMart? LOL!

Competition and the lack of a response killed your Main Street Business, not WalMart!

I dunno. It seems that's a common consensus though (that Walmart helped kill mom and pop stores) and we even had a course about it in college. I don't really like walmart anyways and I don't think anyone else here does either because my city refused to allow them to build yet another ugly box within the city limits. The ironic thing is that we have plenty of Canadian big boxes here.. ah well :)
As a side note I've never, ever, ever been stopped in a store for that reason. Must only happen over there.

You are on their property and they have every right to protect their merchandise. Hey, who knows? Maybe you'll get a strip and body cavity search out of it? :D

Even though you are on their property... once your money has been exchanged for their merchandise, it is then your property. If they ever tried taking me into custody over something stupid like this... I'd make sure they would be scrubbing toilets at their job for a long time.

Well I am white and I always get stopped when leaving the Bessemer Wal-Mart(81% black). So I guess they do target minorities???

But really though it's rather annoying being singled out of the outgoing crowd of walmart and asked for my receipt like some lowly crook.

Shiat, you are totally right to have a problem with that. What the hell is the matter with them? If everyone's receipt were being checked, then it would be more understandable and I wouldn't care. But singling people out is ridiculous. Yeah, you definitely should not have to put up with that.

Those poor souls are trying to make aliving harassing you. I don't see the harm in complying with them, unless of course you....

Next time ask: "Is there some reason you are singling me out, when you are not asking to see everybody elses' receipt?"
That puts the onus on her, and if the reason seems like BS, you can continue the grilling, including complaining to the manager. They get away with this cuz nobody confronts them.

What sucks is that Costco's usually has 3-4 people in line waiting to GET OUT. Walmart and Bestbuy isn't so bad. CompUSA is OK Too. One day I saw someone walking past the Costco crowd w/o getting the receipt checked (someday I'm going to do that), and the person tried to stop them and said if they don't check it then they can't return the merchandise. Big Whoop.

It's really not so bad when they just put a line on your receipt and there's no wait (But it's still stupid). When I have to wait in line to pay and then wait again to leave, that really gets me :|.

Not :| enough though... the delay really amounts to < 1 minute and by the time I get home I forget all about it until the next time I shop there and am heading out to my car. Still it ends my shopping experience on a sour note and when I was in retail that was something you did not want to happen.

I do wonder how many thieves they catch vs how many people they piss off? Apparently enough that it's worthwhile.

Next time you are at CostCo look at the sign above the exit. It says something like.....

"Why do we check your receipt?"

The answer is something like this: To make sure all of your items scanned correctly.....

Please, what person checks the entire list of purchases to make sure the item is scanned correctly......It's a lie.

Anyways, once I purchase an item, it is my property and I don't let them check my receipt. There is no reason for me to let them. If they suspect me of stealing they can call the cops. Until that happens, I'm not stopping for anybody. It's principle.

At fry's and stuff they check everyone. Yes, at places like wal-mart and target and crap they only ask a few people.

Its just annoying because after I pay for something at the register, I like to put the receipt in my wallet next to the rest of my money. I don't wanna take my wallet out again when I get to the door.

If I'm in a good mood or even decent mood I'll be compliant. If I'm in a store I'll likely never be again and am in a bad mod, I go "no, its my property now and if you make me waste any more of my time, I'll call the cops.

Whether it's policy or not I imagine they're more likely to stop people who look like theives. Today I was dressed poorly and sweaty from a 2.5 hour hike in the 120 F weather so I looked quite bummish. I know it's store policy but it's an annoying policy. Even more annoying is the fact that they don't even do anything - her looking at the receipt was a waste of time.

to me it appears that it's not really the policy that bothers you it's the enforcement. If you're not happy with the way you're treated as a customer either don't shop there or complain to the management.

I for one don't care. I enjoy chatting with those nut-jobs... it's a welcome break from the corporate morons I generlly hae to talk to during the course of the day...

Thats ok Skorb. I feel your pain.

I have never stolen a thing in my life, and stuff like this annoys me. Sam's club is fine when they check everyone. But spot checks like this seem to only annoy me. I alwasy go along with it, and they do exactly what they did to you. Look at the reciept for 10 seconds and then use their brain scanning power to look though the bags to see stuff that the cashier missed. I mean comeone, at least look will ya? If you are going to bug me, make it good.

costco = 2 receipt checkers = 60 second "get outta the store line"

Heck, they check EVERY SINGLE ITEM! They even checked if my coke was diet or not! Some people are walking out with 30+ items, and they have to sift through all 30 of them...in a shopping cart!

I think the purpose was not that the contents of the receipt matched the contents of the cart, it was to make sure you could produce a receipt without raising undue alarm. For a not-too-good theif, just asking for the receipt will produce a flustered look and stammering/stalling. That is what they are looking for.

you hit it right on the head... most places that have a membership fee will check everthing you take out of the store, and mark your receipt to show for it.... at walmart, they just randomly check people if they feel like it, and you can refuse it...

At Best Buy its SOP to check the receipt of anything going out of the store that's not in a bag. Thats why certain people get singled out.

In this context, does it really matter which mass merchandiser helped to kill the Mom & Pop stores?
