Can I drive up to Toronto and catch the Northern lights?

First of all, how would I know when and where the Northern Lights will appear? I assume that they would be fairly visible in Toronto.

I'm a n00bie at this, so for instance if I drive up to Canada this weekend, would I be able to see the Aurora Borealis?

First off, Northern Lights vary in where they can be seen.

Last month they were visible as far south as Oklahoma.

There is a website that shows their activity.

Just search for the other thread about this. The light show was truely amazing.

Ive seen them in mid to northern Michigan during several summers, need to get away from city lights though.

Apparently, they were visible here one night in London Ont., which east of Detroit. But usually you have to go way up north to see them. Toronto is too far south.

And only about one quarter of the population of T. lives in igloos nowadays. We're a modern nation now.

OMG!!! Dude!

Another Londoner. Cool.

What part of the city are you from?

You need to go to a place where the city light are near non existent...I used to see this outside of Prince George BC 500 miles north of Vancouver BC-way out in the boonies...its the coolest sight

So the Northern Lights are not visible for a particular season? It basically is visible certain nights out of the year I assume. I don't know if I'm gonna drive further than Montreal though, and from that map it looks like it's too far south as well. 🙁

Looks like Svalsbard is right in the middle of them. I had a crazy Norweigan roommate once who wanted to live there.

Cool, I live downtown, across from the CCH football field. I go to Western-main campus this year.

I saw you post "Forest City" in the nickname thread once, but I figgered it was somewhere else.

Yup. As soon as you cross the border, just pull over. The Northern lights will be right above you.😱

Don't forget to bundle up also. Cause you know the minute you cross the border the temperature drops 30 degrees!

If you make reservations early enough, the tourism board will give you a guide to all the Northern Lights appearances scheduled for this year. And don't forget your umbrella!

you cant even see stars.

so true...
There are certain areas of Toronto where you CAN see stars.

Planetarium? Outside of Park Hyatt during the Film Festival?

To the OP. I've lived here 8 years and have only seen them once (which was a few weeks ago, it they were fairly weak, but still an incredible sight).

So to really see them, you'd have to drive quite a bit up north I imagine.
