Can I do this?

I'm clueless here. I have a windows 7 upgrade disc I used to install over vista 64 on my laptop, but I'm building a desktop now. Questions:

1)can I install that same windows 7 on my computer doing the upgrade disc install trick? Ill only use the desktop for games.

2)can I run the vista I upgrade over on my desktop?

No, the original OS (Vista64 in your case) can't be legally used after you use the upgrade.

The whole reason you get the cheaper price on the upgrade license is because you have a previous license that it's supplanting. If you want to keep using both you need a full license.

For performance, I would guess that they're comparable and that the hardware and drivers will have a much larger affect on the system's performance, but I don't have any data to back that up.

Yeah but theres a trick I've seen on this forum where you can install the upgrade, then run the upgrade disc again and it turns out to be a legit copy of win 7.

Yes, that's convenient for not having to do 2 installs. But that doesn't make it legal to violate the license agreement and keep using the older OS on a different machine.

If you'll look on new games requirements there you have Vista/7 so they are equal in this case.

Soon after Win7's release, I benched both Win7 and Vista, and they were virtually identical for performance. Maybe that's changed some since Win7's been out longer, but I tend to doubt it.
