hi all. trying to help setup my sister's internet cable modem sharing in each rooms.

I have decided not to use the router method. can I use this following method...I will try draw it best as I can.

Cable modem ----connect to ---> Hub/Switch ----> then PC1, PC2, PC3 etc

I remember have tried to use this method back in win98 days on my own network but it didnt work. does XP have new internet sharing that makes this work? I know this way may require buying 2nd IP, but is there a way using software so I dont need to buy 2nd IP?

thanks all

Nope, it won't work. You'll either have to buy a router or set up one of the PCs directly connected to the cable modem and have it act as the router.

You can set up your computer as the gateway, with internet sharing. You'll have to get a second NIC in your computer to do that. What you're suggesting will not work because it exposes all the computers connected to the switch/hub. You'll have to get as many IPs as there are computers on the switch.

hi all. thanks again for everyone's comment. looks like I may need to go with router method.
one question about this setup.. if router has 4 port, which means 4 PCs net access, what can I do if I have 5th PC?

can I do this method, and get away with it?

cable modem ---> router
----> PC1
----> PC2
----> PC3
----> hub ---->PC4
---->PC5
I dont care about the speed, as long as all pcs have net access. I havnt got a router yet, thats why I'm asking this. and some router only with 2 or 3 ports.

thanks again

Yes, you can do that as long as the router has an UPLINK port. You will get three machines on the router and then the hub can handle the other two.

Cheapest way to do it is what ojai00 suggested, here's a diagram

CABLE MODEM-->PC1 with 2 nics, one to connect from cable modem, one to connect to switch-->hub/switch-->PC1 through 5 million :)

keep in mind that you need XP, ME or 2K on PC1, ot you can use 3rd party software, like (somethign gate, I don't remember)

Usually routers don't require to hook the HUB into the router's Uplink port, you just have to use a straight cable from one of the router ports into the Hub's uplink and it should work fine. I'm running my setup right now where I have 4 PC's. 2 are hooked directly into the router, the other 2 are hooked into a hub which hooks into the router. My setup...

Cable Modem --> Router
|
Port 1 on Router - Living Room PC
Port 2 on Router - Brother's bedroom PC
Port 3 on Router - Connected to Uplink port on HUB in bedroom using Straight cable
|
Port 2 on HUB - Main PC
Port 3 on HUB - File Server

It doesn't work that way on my Linksys router, if you tried to do it on any other port than uplink it would not assign an IP address to more than one computer connected to the hub. :confused:

scorpiots,

If you decide to go with a router, you can also get the Linksys 1-port router and then hook that up to a 8-port switch or however many users you would like to have connected to it.
