Can I deposit a check at a different bank ?

My branch is Scotia bank, but there isn't one on campus here. There is a TD bank that is however, am I able to deposit a check from my old work there ?

If they have an ATM that accepts deposits, yes. Otherwise, no.

I always thought you could only deposit checks at your own bank, but you can cash your checks anywhere, as long as you have a proper id.

I actually haven't been to a teller in years since atms are much more convenient, but I'd assume so. And if not, they could probably tell you the correct method to get your money, since there's always the chance that I'm wrong .

Maybe. If it's the bank that the check is written on, probably. If it's a third, unaffiliated bank, maybe, but not terribly likely.

Are you trying to DEPOSIT the check into your account, or get CASH and CASH only from the check?

If you are trying to deposit the check into your account, then no, you cannot do this at a different bank unless it is the same type of bank... as in, both are Fifth Third banks or something...

As far as cashing the check, different banks have different policies. Some charge a fee to cash a check if you don't have an account, some won't let you do it at all... some only let you do it for up to a certain amount.

Scotia Bank is Canadian, isn't it? That might make a big difference.
In the US though, the answer to your question is almost always no.

No, you cannot deposit checks in another bank. You can only cash a check at another bank if the check was issued by the bank.

How in the world were you going to deposit without a check/savings account at that particular bank? -_-

Chrono is right on the $$$, I worked at a bank for several years. The only 2 exceptions are:

1) Occasionally a bank may offer to cash a third party check if its a cashiers check/mo/travelers check for a small fee. Even in those instances, they will not cash a check over $500

2) If a 3rd party bank has a buisness relation to your own bank, they may accept your deposit, but you will not get credited with the deposit right away (And you can't withdrawl from that check, it has to be a straight deposit) What they basically do is mail the check via either interbranch mail or regular mail to your home bank. This generally occurs only during mergers, if its sister bank (not frequent since interstate banking is now legal), etc...

Go to a branch of your employer's bank if you can. Otherwise, go to one of those check cashing places. They'll only skim a few percent for themselves.
