Hi there.
Quick question: Can I control refresh rates in 3D games. Let's say I'm playing Unreal at 1024 X 768. Monitor always shows 60Hz refresh rate. Can I increase it let's say to 80Hz? Is it possible.

Thanks.

Just in games? Why?
I recommend running a decent refresh rate all the time. You can set a higher refresh rate in windows by right clicking on desktop, choose the "properties" menu option, click the "settings" tab, click "Advanced", click the "Monitor" tab, choose the highest listed refresh rate in the drop down list and click OK.

I think that increasing monitor refresh increases game refresh as well as desktop.. (can anyone confirm?) so with vsync you'd go from capping at 60 to caping at 85 if moving from 60hz to 85hz... right?

thanks for reply Moishe. But problem is that I have 80Hz refresh rate in Windows at 1024 X 768, but when I play 3D game at 1024 X 768 it switches to 60Hz(looks like it always defaults to 60Hz in 3D games).

That sucks... lol.
Is it hovering at 60fps or is that merely it's peak? can your card do more?
did you turn off vsync?
What kind of card do you have?

Actually, that's a pretty good question cause it makes me start to think as well.
I have my desktop at 1280x1024 and I was wondering what my refresh would change to if I was playing a game at 1024x768 or 1600x1200? I don't play with Vsync on but I am curious how it changes refresh rates.

vscync doesnt change refresh rates at all, it synconises delvery of frames from the video card to the the vertical refresh rate of the monitor.

I mean by changing resolutions different from the desktop, what happens to refresh rates? Do they change to max spec at the given resolution or do they keep the same refresh rate that the desktop was set at?

rmd2001 if you`re using a Nvidia card & 2K or WinXP,you can use NVRefreshTool 2.0 from
here , it allows you to adjust each refresh rate for each resolution ,so you can choose what you want for gaming .

I'm afraid you're stuck at 60Hertz no matter the resolution both for gaming and desktop. Use RefreshForce and you'll be able to get 70 hertz which is easier on the eyes and makes games run smooth as a movie with vsync enabled.
