Thanks everybody - lotsa useful information. Black2na, you even showed me how to better look at a car!

Absorbing all that, I now think that I should
a) haggle for a deeper discount for a rebuilt title
b) get full information on the car (pictures, carfax and insurance reports).
c) pay a mechanic to thoroughly inspect the car

Thanks for the link HarryLiu, good info and the comments there add value too. Found out VinAudit is another reporting agency.

Quick look on Autotrader finds me LOTS of Corollas under 9k with less miles and newer (2010) than this vehicle. That's before haggling.

I would bet you could find a newer, less miles, NON-salvage Corolla for around 8k. The CL seller lists his car as 7500 'firm'. Sorry OP, this is a bad buy for anyone.

True - I should look at all that first. I see pretty good value there now; thanks!

This actually is for my wife. After her first corolla 14 years ago, she's owned a mazda, a ford and the current nissan. That corolla was the only one we found completely trouble free. So I guess we are back to being Indian now ;)!

And, umm, that pic is not of an Indian. Just saying.

You'd put your wife in a rebuilt corolla probably fixed up by some Cuban (its S Florida) with a dubious CL posting?

Lol...

I will admit that I put-down Toyotas, but they are reliable. Corollas are nice, simple cars that just keep going. I have to say if I commuted a long way and put a lot a lot of miles on my car, a Corolla would be a great choice.

Good luck!

heh heh, when you put it that way, does sound messed up logic; I was only about saving money, and of course would not have told her... ;)

but I guess I gotta rethink it...

And that's what she says - efficiency first. I like my SUV - but I commute just 4 miles.

Yeah. I either work from home or commute about 1.2m. I really couldn't care less about MPGs, but I certainly understand those that do.

I think you'll be wasting your time. There're gonna be gullible buyers who would pay the asking price.

There's nothing wrong with buying a car with salvage/rebuilt title, but I suppose 7500 is too much for a corolla with rebuilt title. I bought cars both with rebuilt and with salvage title - view here, and I didn't have any big issues with them. if you have any doubts you should have the car checked by a mechanic.

That's not the case in my state. Salvage title cars are completely road legal if they have been repaired. The title will always say "salvage". I had a Ford Focus that was a salvage title, got it cheap and it was a great little car. Got side swiped and the other fellows insurance paid me fair value for it.

I'm in NC, so things may be different.

But I know someone who bought a car with a salvage title (we don't have "rebuilt" titles to my knowledge) and shortly afterward was in a wreck and her car totaled.

Point being the insurance company wouldn't reimburse her much at all due to the title. She took a pretty good out-of-pocket cash loss.

Might be wise for the OP to check with insurance company policy in his state. I.e., don't pay more than than the insurance company will reimburse or cover.
