Can I carry a gun in a private plane?

Without knowing the airport exactly, it is hard to tell.. In most cases you should be fine as long as the PIC is ok with it (yes, you do have to ask him)

All the airports i have ever gone in and out of i have never had to get a special pass of any type to goto the plane. And that includes flying the single engine 6 seater into some big airports.

I will be flying out of GR, possibly Greenville but I doubt that. I have driven the owner to the airport before and I couldn't go all the way to the plane because I didn't have a pass. I didn't ask more because I didn't care. I've never flew on a private plane so I have no idea how boarding works.

I am in OH and there was no way I was coming down here without carrying. However I was voluntold that I would be flying out to Omaha on Thursday night. So I was like...ummmm....what do I do with my gun on the plane? I can't follow the normal FAA procedures since there is no checked baggage and I damn sure didn't want to carry in the airport.
 
What kind of gun? I can store it here in my safe. I'll even clean it for you (after I've run a box or two through it).

No policy on guns. It is not forbidden and because we are in bad neighborhoods a lot...it is slightly implied that its ok if you have a license. But no one else has a license and I haven't broadcast that I carry.
 
There is nothing in the FAR that prohibits you from carrying a firearm on a plane, of course state laws apply first and each airfield may have their own rules.

I would rather that than drive 5 hours back up to Grand Rapids just to fly however many hours to get to Omaha. But I have one of the company cars and they kind of like the Mazda. Probably don't want me to ditch it.
 
Of course you can. On one particular flight from Maine to Florida, my old man brought more than a dozen long guns, in addition to 4 or 5 revolvers, and as always his faithful Plotthound.

Found out later when we landed in Marathon he had a chunk of weed the size of my foot in his briefcase too (he used to be a redneck hippy). He left Scotland once with a small fortune in rare spirits, along with a rifle suppressor he had been given to use on rabbits when hunting with friends off in the hills. No big deal, a guy meets you at the plane, you talk for 2 min, and then your car or truck is brought up next to the bird and you unload, then drive home.


Pretty awesome actually. They want you to give your pooch a puppy valium, thats the only thing the carrier insists on iirc.

But then security kinda sucks with AMTRAK too doesn't it?

Pretty sure I can put enough ecstasy and hash in 2 suitcases to make the trip pay for itself

Not like I have those kinds of connections or anything...
 
you'll have no issues. General Aviation ramp security is about controlling access; they don't care what you take along as long as they can keep track of your movements.
 
Your problem isn't with the plane (assuming you have permission from the owner), it's with the airport. If the airport/landing strip is completely private, you'll need their permission as well. If it's public, don't even think about it.

Uh.. No. You couldn't be more wrong. It all comes down to state law but in a lot of cases there is no issue with public airports.
