nitromethane > methanol

hobby stores have it, that is what model engines use for fuel

Yes, but it is usually only sold at a maximum level of 20%.

If you have any car peformance places around you, you can get it there. We use methanol for fuel in our race car, and there are like 3 places we get it from (CL Bryant, ERC, and a race car shop).

Exactly. The most you can usually get at stores is 20, but I've seen 30 at competitions (I'm assuming either the person used distillation, or bought it from someone else).

Methanol as a fuel for model airplane engines, but I think it has other additives such as a lubricant. Nitromethane?

Just remember that it is special stuff and likes to burn without a visible flame (until you catch fire). But, water is a great fire extinquisher.

Nitromethane burns with a clear flame too. The nitromethane also contains lubricants for the engine as well. When I get a chance, I will go into my garage and grab a can and tell you the actual components of the Nitro fuel for RC Cars.

We did a crazy demo in chem class today with methanol and one of those office water canisters. I want to replicate it.

Oops, that did not make sense. I meant to nitromethane on a new line.

As for the lubricant, I have not been around RC planes in awhile, but my olfactory memory says caster? oil.

Nitromethanol is a high performance fuel, Methonal can be used as a fuel.

Nitromethane that is bought for Nitromethane RC cars/boats/planes contains Nitromethane and caster oil.

Nitromethane should not be confused with METHYL ALCOHOL.

methyl alcohol = rubbing alcohol stuff, right? I think that's what he meant.

No rubbing alcohol= isopropanol=2-propanol

Methonal = Methyl Alcohol = Wood Alcohol.

Not that hard to understand, drink small amounts and you go blind, drink a little more and you die.

methanol is the base fuel, nitromethane is an additive, along with either castor oil or some synthetic.

here is 40% nitromethane

what with 18% lubricant the fuel is only 42% methanol

RC car fuel has methanol, nitromethane and some sort of lubricant (sometimes castor oil) The cars usually run a max of %30 but thats extreme. I have a bottle of %30 but its next to impossible to keep the engine in proper tune running that. HIgher than %30 is used in the model airplane engnes.
