2) Plenty of imported cheeses are available at specialty stores. The Atlanta area has few shops dedicated only to cheese. They get the same cheese you'll be attempting to bring back on a plane. Why not just get it there?

I have brought back a few Goudas from Amsterdam though, but this was about 4 years ago.

true enough, but the big deal in USA:

FDA = 100% pasteurized.

even the imported stuff must be pasteurized. this is a crock of shit, meaning that the same type, from the same maker will not be nearly as good if you buy it in the states as opposed to buying it overseas.

anyhoo, you can certainly bring back cheeses. just don't declare anything. I'm guessing you might want to bring some serious Gruyeres, or maybe some French cheeses. In which case, you probably don't want to place this in your checked baggage. Same with wine: de-pressurized storage under the plane is a bad idea.

1) The only good American cheese I've had was in Wisconsin. In any case, I don't have any near where I live.

2) Getting imported cheese is easy, but expensive. It's easily half the price in Switzerland. It's the same reason I'm bringing back wine (a $100 bottle of French wine in America is much cheaper locally)

How are you going to bring wine back? Mailing it is out, you can't carry it on the plane, and you want to avoid checking it in, as it could ruin the wine. Though, I've done it before, I still wouldn't recommend it ;)

so smuggle that bitch in!

if the cheese is aged for more then 60 days, it does not have to be pasteurized. Thats why you'll find so many good imported swiss varients in the US. a lot of french cheese can not come to the US due to the fact they do not age it enough for US standards.
The key thing is it has to be aged for 60 days. But, if you like any type of swiss then it is no big deal, most of the good cheese is aged between 60-100 days.

I can't stand pasteurized swiss.

Yes, that is exactly the problem. Here I can get really great local cheese for $15-$20/kilo (ie 2.2 lbs)

Just ignore him. He thinks that if you spend more money on something it must be good, like a $200 pair of jeans.

I'd give it a try. My parents brought back a HUGE hunk of Parmesan from Italy.

that's because you get what you pay for. Which is why you get through life with shitty, inferior products, foods and services.

why don't you just by some swiss cheese from here?

this is one of your least intelligent posts.

I didn't mean 'american' swiss, I meant 'swiss' swiss from a specialty store.

then you wouldn't have to get in fights with customs to save a few bucks!
