Can I back up and use my OS again?

I have all the components for a new build but realized without the disk I shall be lost!

Can I copy all the relevant files from my current HDD (I have nooooo idea how I would do that) and then basically have a new XP disc to use on my new build?

To clarify, Im not trying to use the same XP on two computers, my new build is replacing my old one, which will have the components sold off (after formatting the HDD of course) so I am not trying to double up.

My feeling, and hopefully legally speaking, I bought a fully licensed retail copy of XP and now just want to move it to my new build. Is this possible? If so is there a guide somewhere on how to do it?

Much thanks in advance.

I don't think it's possible to make a XP CD from files off your current installation. At least I've never heard of such a way. Best way is probably to borrow a friend's retail CD and install with your own key.

If you still have the old computer, there are things you can do to help an existing Windows XP install be moved from one PC to another. Then you can clone that modified Windows system to the new drive and see if it boots.

Otherwise, the best option is to clone the old disk to the new disk, insert the new disk in the new PC, and try a Windows XP "Repair Install". That can let Windows XP adapt to the new motherboard and chipset.

Finally, you could borrow a Retail XP CD. Or ask Microsoft for a replacement. I believe they have a replacement program of some sort for Retail disks (you'll have to check MS' site), but the new CD won't be free.
