can hdmi cable replace dvi cable?

my ati 4870 has an hdmi port in the back as well as my monitor. can i pull the dvi cable and simply replace it with an hdmi cable?
 
Yes.

The video part of HDMI and DVI are basically identical. There are cables and adapters to convert them to each other. HDMI can carry sound too, but using it is optional.
