can hard drives go bad from non-use

i'm going to back up some things on a external hard drive. it'll be stuff that'll fill it up and i won't use at all, maybe once or twice a year. being that hard drives are mechanical, will they show problems faster from non-use? would it be better to power it up more often just for the sake of running it?
