Do you have to open Outlook to get Outlook Calendar reminders? It seems to me I saw somewhere that you could have it run as a service. I'm running Windows 2000 Pro SP2. Is there a way to do this or do I have to actually open Outlook and have it running to get reminders? I don't actually plan to use Outlook for anything but the Calendar features, and am running Office 2000 Pro. Thanks.

I built a small app that extract the list of Outlook Tasks from the default personal folder. What I found out was that the app must load Outlook to memory in order to work.

So to answer your question, I doubt that there are any apps out there that will do what you want to do without loading Outlook to memory.

It really should do it though it just does not make sense why they would not program it to that! That is the only thing about Outlook that sucks! Is there any other Calendar program that will handle this task?

I have to think that MS intentionally decided to not let you use the Calendar function without having launched Outlook. They don't want to give you that power. There must be other programs around that are more convenient than using Outlook for this stuff. Actually, Calendar isn't as configurable as I'd like. You can only alert 5, 10, 15, 30 minutes, 1 to 11 hours (on the hour only), .5, 1 and 2 days in advance. I find myself creating separate events a week in advance to get earlier notice on events way on the horizon. It's designed for a person in a networked office environment, but even for that, it's not what I would call fully featured. I really like the recurrence stuff, though.
