me and my roommate are in an arguement. can eggs go bad (uncooked, still in the shells)? i say it's not a good idea to use em past the expiration date, however he says they last up to 2 months (about a month after the expiration date) if kept in the fridge.

who's right?

Put them in a deep bowl of water. If they rise to the top, they are rotten.

If they just sort of point up, they are getting kind of old.

If they stay on the bottom of the bowl, they are good.

my wife found a carton of eggs in the fridge last weekend. Date was march something. When she cracked the egg, there was this disgusting grayish black goop inside.

SO, yes, eggs do go bad :)

if eggs can't go bad, where did the term 'rotten eggs' come from? ;)

Isla -- that's a very good egg test! ...i hope i remember though, a few months from now which is which! (floating bad, or sinking good?) :)

Oh they go bad pretty easy. I think it was 20/20 that had some peice on how some stores or distributers weren't keeping the eggs at the right temperature.. bacteria counts go up fast. Its not too much of a risk if you fully cook your eggs, but if you dont hehe..you might have some suffering ahead:p

What's a dozen eggs cost? $1.89? For that kind of money, it's not worth the risk, or the trouble to find out. Isla's absolutely correct in her test, but personally I'd just toss them at your neighbor's Porsche & go buy some new ones.
