Can download, but can't surf

Hi,
I have broadband ADSL [yippee] but the problem is that it is possible to surf for a few minutes, then it keeps on popping up with 'remote server has closed this connection' error.
All websites will do this after a while, and the only way to sort this out is to disconnect, then reconnect.

Meanwhile, Btorrent and Kazaa[virus laden but still at bay for now] give me no problem.

The system is fairly stable otherwise and has just been newly installed.

the setup is
win98se / 600mhz/ 256mb/ 80gig hdd [no problems]
opera 7.5 browser [same errors with IE6].
kerio firewall [have disabled and uninstalled - nothing to do with the problem]
AVG antivirus [Same]

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Oh yes,.
Am using a USB adsl modem - speedtouch330.
It was supplied by the isp, and was a doddle to setup.

Have you done a virus scan lately? How 'bout spyware?

Clean.

Have av software.
Adaware.
Spy bot.

spy bazooka.

Nothing has turned up.

I've had problems similar to this before. Usually when something like this comes up, I delete all my interenet connections, I uninstall my nic card from the device manager, and I reboot. 99% of the time this fixes network errors.

Let us know if you fix it.

I've already uninstalled/reinstalled tcpip, but i'll take everything out this time.
Unfortunately, the poota isn't here, but will let you know next week

Have you discussed your difficulties with your provider's tech support team. Sometimes they know zactly what to do.
