All in my opinion will rest on what message the Democrats decide to project. I believe their best chance is to craft a message that has universal rather than identity politics appeal. It depends, I think, on whether the message is of grievance or hope. I can easily see how Democrats will become so enamored of their outrage they will unconsciously cause themselves to lose so they can continue to cry in their beer.

This assumes messaging is the only determinant of victory. Other things also influence voters, like personalities.

They need someone to vote FOR, not just someone to vote against.​

My impression of 2016 is that Clinton fell for the trap. Both candidates spent their air time rolling around in the mud. Clinton had little time to make any case, to appeal towards the voters I feel can be reached by inspiration. That trap will still exist in 2020. If all the air time is just "Trump, Trump, Trump" then I feel that is a weaker message. There needs to be time and energy dedicated towards appealing to voters.

I don't think Clinton spent an inordinate amount of time discussing Trump during the campaign. There was a perception of it but it was really the news media who put the focus on Trump. Any time Clinton said anything about him, it was more likely to make headlines than would a policy address.

The point being, the candidate doesn't get to decide how much focus will be on Trump. That will also be true in 2020.
