Can/do vegetarians still eat fish?

I recently started becoming a vegetarian and am just curious.
I need to find some creative ways to get protein because i really dislike the texture of tofu, and I don't want to eat meat.

I know of some vegetarians that do eat fish, and they say that fish is a completely different type of meat, it has no fats, nothing but pure good for you.

Just wondering if this is true and what you think,

What about supplements?

I thought the whole idea of being a vegaterian was to not eat animals.. I suppose fish could be a caluse, I dunno

Whoever told you this is a complete idiot.

On the basis of protein gained vs fat, calories, and cholesterol consumed, then fish is one of the best things you can eat. Assuming you grill it and not bread/deep fry it and smother it in butter and other stuff.

Very high in protien, very low in fat and calories, and contains omega 3 fatty acids which are very beneficial and hard to obtain from foods other than nuts and fish.

"vegetarian" is a whole spectrum of non-eating madness, at one end passing up only the delicious moo-cow and other land animals, at the other end eating only fruit, vegetables, and nuts, all raw. Where you place yourself in the rainbow of critter non-consumption is up to you.

Exactly. There are as many types of "vegetarians" as there are people claiming to be a "vegetarian". I put quotes around the word, since to me a vegetarian will eat NO meat on purpose (we all eat meat on accident, think bugs) but many people claim to be a vegetarian and eat meat.

I think a lot of the confusion comes from Catholics. They have Fridays where they aren't supposed to eat meat, but they all eat fish. Then some vegetarians decided to do the same thing.

I can't remember all the different types but,

ovavegetarians: vegetarians who eat eggs

lactovegetarians: vegetarians who consume dairy products (not counting old dairy cows that have been turned into cheap hamburger)

And fish contains fat...
on the positive side, there's not as much fat as cows, pigs, etc.
on the negative side, a lot of toxins are accumulated and concentrated in fish fat; and with all the mercury and stuff, frequent meals of fish are discouraged.

And, lastly,
mushrooms.... vegetables or animals? Answer: they don't belong in either kingdom; they're in the fungi kingdom. And, fungi are more closely related to animals than plants. (bet you didn't know!)

If it's good for you, and you like it, you should eat it. Humans are omnivores and as such are designed to eat meats as well as various non-meat foods; I think it's stupid to choose to deny that part of your nature.

I agree. I eat a lot of vegetarian foods, but I am not "vegetarian." I eat a lot of soy, tofu, ground meatless, etc. Because there is a lot of health benefits.
But there are also health benefits to eating some meat and fish, too. So I do. I eat lots of fish, and a little bit of other meats here and there. Mostly chicken, but sometimes beef, pork, veal, game, etc.

sounds like you listen to other people too much, why dont you research it yourself?

Actually fish does have fat. The fats that they have are actually very good for you. The problem comes when you eat older fish (larger) as they have more accumulated heavy metals in them. The heavy metals then accumulate in your body so you shouldn't eat it that often. Also, the fatty fish, (ie salmon and trout) have generally greater amounts of fat soluble polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB's), the farm raised varieties tend to be worse I've heard. PCB's (not to be confused with the electronic boards) are carcinogenic pollutants that leak out of electrical transformers or get dumped into rivers by General Electric among others.

I'm not a vegitarian but I won't eat anything that had hair on it when it was alive. Everyone else is fair game.

depends on why you are beging a vegetarian

my old boss ate fish and sea food because "they live a free life until they are caught".. i think she just liked fish

I dunno if I totally believe the whole "fish are nothing but pure good" statement. With all the crap we dump in the oceans that the fish eat I still don't trust it.
