Can contacts stored on SIM cards only have one number per identity?

I dumped all my contacts from Phone Memory -> SIM card and when I did so, the 'home/office/mobile' designation was lost. For example, if I had John Smith's three numbers under his name, on the SIM card they were expanded to 'John Smith1' 'John Smith2' and 'John Smith3'

So do SIM cards not have the capability of designating multiple numbers per contact? (inherent limitation) or does my phone suck?

Yeah, same thing happened with my old phone. I think it's a limit of the sim.

theres some way to make it so when u copy off a sim it will make to have multiple numbers under a phone

Mine is it like
John/M
John/H

and when it copies to my phone its 2 numbers under john

I think the correct answer is "it depends". As in, "likely dependent on a number of factors".

At present, I have all my multi-numbered contacts stored on the SIM card rather than the phone, and they appear to transfer well to other phones (multiple numbers appear under one contact name correctly).

What phone is this? The only SIM enabled phones I've used are Motorolas... but they've had no problem with multiple numbers per identity.

You probably weren't explicitly storing them on the SIM card. Most phones seem to default to the storage space of the phone and use the SIM card only to grab the pertinent information to get you on the network.

This seems like a vendor specific workaround for an inherent limitation of the SIM card. Since I'm going from Nokia to Motorola this might not work. But damn, this would be great.

String parsing to compensate for SIM deficiencies FTW

.... No, I'm 100% sure the contacts were on the SIM card. I've moved the SIM between phones, and the contacts followed the SIM.

I cannot hav emultiple #s for identies on my Moto V600, but this can be done on my SE K750i and K700. They store on phone by default, but when I copy contacts to SIM, it reads John/M, John/H, etc...

Edit: Also when I pop in any new SIM card to a SE phone, they will ask you to copy contacts over by default, and so SE phones interpret the /M /H parts and they consolidate it all into 1 identity =]

Not if you set the phone to only enter them on the Sim... right now I have a moto phone and everything is stored on the sim and I can keep multiple numbers per entry.

My bad. It seems like certain vendors have provided a workaround for this. But Nokia hasn't, judging from my research.
