Can collections come after you if debt is not under your name?

Why would they go after his family?

I used to temp at a collections agency (not as a collector myself, I just did their filing for a couple months).

basically they'll contact whoever they can to try to find the debtor (or their crap to repossess). family members, neighbors, roommates, etc. they can't legally go after a family member to collect, but I'd imagine they might encourage a family member that if X dollars were paid, it might buy the person a couple more months to pay the rest.
