Wasn't there a hack floating around that allowed to some degree what the OP is asking?
Maybe it was for just reading DVDs, but might be what inspired the question.

By the way, I found an extra spindle of blank CDs lying around that I had forgotten I picked up recently. So I'm back in business.

This is the happiest thread in General Hardware! :)

Back when CD burners still cost over $200, there was a hoax software made by someone in the Netherlands, that
advertised itself as: enabling a CD reader (through software only) to be able to burn CD's. It went through all the steps
of burning, making one think that it actually worked. But in the end, the blank CD was still blank.
Ha-ha-ha! No surprise, really...

Wow, I saw the question and noticed all the responses - naturally, I assumed there was an all out flamefest going on in here - so I grabbed my lawnchair and, boy was I suprised ;)

This thread should get locked and stickied before it gets tainted so as to set an example of what a civilized thread looks like!

Heh, I might try this to an old cd drive that I have laying around for fun. Curious if this really works.

Exactly what I was thinking. I have a CD drive in a bookshelf propping the end of some books up, I might try it.
