I'd buy one right now, before your 6800gt's drop too much more. Buy a second when needed.

With that setup, I'd wait. Prices on these are dropping fast and it'd save you a few bucks most likely.

Sell the 6800's while there still worth it.
Buy 1 7800 and be happy with the same if not more performace.
When needed buy a second.
Easy choice here.

2 x 7800 gtx probably is great but its too expensive for me! $1000 for something that will be beat by something else in 6 months... I just don't see it.

Only you can determine if it's worth it to you or not. I'm in the same exact situation, and I have decided to hold on to the GTs because at the resolution I play at, and the settings I choose, the single GTX performs right about the exact same as the GT SLI.

According to Anandtech's article, the results at 16x12 with 4xAA are as follows:

Game.......6800U SLI.........GTX
BF2...............53.3..............53.4
Doom3..........75.4..............54.2
HL2..............118.4..............119
SC:CT..........53.7...............56.5
KOTOR2.......47.4................52
UT2k4..........75.3................73.9

Some pros for the GTX:
TSAA capabilities
single-card solution, so less heat, power, etc
performance works in every game where SLI shows no increase in some older games
you could sell your GTs for around $600 maybe, and pocket the extra $$$

I'm choosing to wait because the benchmarks show there is no FPS advantage at the resolution/settings I play at. The heat hasn't been a problem for my system since I built it in Feb., and the extra power isn't crippling my PSU or my elec bill. SLI seems to work fine on every game I play, and I feel confident that trend will continue with newer games as well.

There's always a strong desire to upgrade when something new comes out. Especially for those of us who bought SLI since it's obvious we won't hesitate to throw money at something. But I am going to wait until a SINGLE card solution really puts my GTs to shame or a game comes out that I want to play and cannot. Who knows, maybe the upcoming ATI or rumored nV Ultra will be that card.

I dunno. I would go with the single 7800GTX and sell the two 6800GT's. I have 7800GTX's in SLI now, and that is my plan for when the 8-series comes out next year. The money I get for two 7800GTX's should cover the price of one 8-series... That way, you pretty much break even, and you have another PCI-E slot open for a future SLI upgrade. Honestly, I like my SLI rig, and I have been planning on building one pretty much since it came out, but I'm really not sure if I would do it again. It's extremely costly for the noticable performance increase you get, plus v-sync doesn't work properly, so in way, the IQ is decreased. NVIDIA is working on this issue, but apparently, they have been working on it for a while.

Dang, you must have a lot of money to burn if you bought two 6800GTs, and now want to sell them for a single 7800GTX, which is about the same speed.

I believe you should stick with the 6800GTs and wait until the 8xxx series comes out. Upgrading from your current setup is a waste of money.

If you can sell the GTs for enough to cover the price of the GTX, I would go that route.

How long have you had that 6800GT. If it has been less than 90days just "step up"

I would wait, as prices are dropping, and will drop even further when the R520 is released or the Ultra is released.

Ugh. Everyone thinks theres going to be an ultra version in the near future that will perform so much better than the GTX. I got news for you guys, it will be 6-9 months before it appears, along with the R580 (or the R520, if it ever comes out)

We will see at quakecon wont we? ;)

There are no less than 8 pieces of hardware missing from "exsistence" in current NV drivers, some of these are the C51 integrated chipset based on the Geforce 6200.

At least 1 of these is the 7800GT which is painfully close to release, some stores have slipped up and released the specs already. ZZF had the XFX up on their page for a few minutes at 420 core, 1000 memory, 20 pipes, $449.

The 7800GTX overclocks EXTREMELY well, indicating this is not the highest peroformance part NV can put out, especially with its nearly pathetic cooling system in place now.

Nvidia has a release coming out called "The power of 3" at quakecon.

It either going to be the C51, GT, and GTX (redundant, and C51 is a 6 series)

The GT, GTX, Ultra (possible)

C51, GT, Ultra (3 new releases, but again, C51 is a 6 series GPU)

OR it could be something completely different, in reference to driver upgrades that support Dual Core, or using the C51 chip with SLI to acheive 3 GPU performance.

The only information we really have now is that current beta drivers claim large increases with SMP/SMT, and that the 7800GT is very close to release.
