when i go to ikea i always park in the 5 minute pick up parking which requires driving into and down the one way parking lot the wrong way. anyway i did this yesterday and a security guard did a u turn and followed me. he yelled at me and i ignored him (i was going to pretend he had the wrong car and i didnt know what he was talking about.) then he said "ive seen you do that 3 times before and the next time youre getting a ticket!". so i apologized and went inside, but it made me wonder whether he could even do that. ive never seen a security guard give a ticket. was he going to call a cop or something, and even if he did that would a cop give a ticket to a person if he hadnt witnessed the violation himself?? id really hate to have to start parking in the regular lot

They could ban you from the premises, but I don't think there's anything legally binding they can do with regards to a ticket. In other words, I don't think it would affect your license in any way.

unless you are parked in a fire zone, he legally can't do squat.

You should obey basic traffic rules even in a parking lot on private property.

I can't see why not. They can give parking tickets, which are payable at city hall (at least here). So I can't see why not a speeding ticket for example if going too fast in a parking lot. I've seen parking lots with limits as low as 5km/h. It's not really enforced though, but legally they could ticket you as far as I know.

what about traffic lights on what seems to be mall property? I'm guessing they are probably real traffic lights, but I'm not quite sure?

However, if they have you on footage (CCTV), they can show it to the cops and you CAN get a ticket.

Additionally, private property laws state that the owner of the property can give the law all the rights they'd have on public property if the owner so wishes it. If a cop sees you on said private property doing something stupid, he can drive right over and cite you.

No, they're not real traffic lights and you cannot get cited for failing to yield to a traffic control device.

Stop signs are another matter, though.

I've never really seen that. Around here, the traffic lights are in the mall complex, but on public roads that pass through. A light completely on mall property would be unenforceable I'd think. If a real cop saw you blow a private light, he might be able to get you for reckless driving, or something like that. Not really sure.

I'm really not sure if the roads are mall property or not though. Ya know, the roads that usually circle the mall. Hmm. Next time I'm there I should pay attention to whether the traffic lights are the same kind as the rest of the town, though that isn't exactly proof

I know this, but we are discussing security guards not police.

Is that accurate? Obviously stop signs are important and needed, but what would be different about them versus a red light if both are at the mall? Maybe tomorrow at work I'll do some googling

There's significantly more regulation when it comes to "legal" stop lights. Speed zones must be set, safe stopping distance must be calculated, timing on the transition from yellow to red has to be calculated accordingly, etc. It all has to be 'certified' and you won't get that on private property.

signs on their property are for their enforcement only. a cop can't give you a ticket from rolling a stop sign in a parking lot; but you're still going to be at fault in an accident, obviously.

i don't see how that matters, as a private security guard cannot give a real ticket. only an 'ikea ticket' in this case, much like a security guard at a private college or business park might. e.g. if you don't pay it, they kick you out or ban your vehicle or something.

edit- oh lol. i skimmed the OP too much. you know, because he's barely intelligible.

here's a question- what does it take for them to actually be able to do something in non-communist canada?

e.g. they get you on camera doing 40mph through an empty lot. what's the charge? reckless endangerment or some kinda catch-all?

ive gotten a ticket for not stopping at a stop sign on a street circling a mall, so you can definitely get a mall stop sign ticket

You are absolutely incorrect.

How exactly do you envision the police enforcing traffic laws on private property? Or better yet, how's the security guard going to detain you while they arrive??
