Can apple computers hibernate?

I cannot figure out how to get my mini to hibernate, only sleep. Is this normal? Especially under windows I would like it to hibernate.

Sleep is hibernate. It's very low power but everything's still in memory, so it's still super quick to back into.

For instance, I will put my Macbook into Sleep mode and leave it on battery, and I will still have 95% of my battery the next morning.

However, hibernate stores to hard disk so I can unplug and move the computer (which I do frequently).

I think there is a way to enable that functionality, but IIRC it involves fiddling with Terminal commands to change what the OS thinks is 'sleep'. I know that on the laptops when the battery gets to 1% or whatever the machine is supposed to copy the RAM contents to the hard drive, but it doesn't always. So the OS knows what to do, it is just a matter of tricking it.

And Windows should have hibernate.

Why? I can;t stand browsing the net on the big HDTV, to hard to setup and hold the KB/MS on my lap. Plus it is too comfortable and browsing turns into sleeping real quick. So I watch videos on the TV with it, then take it downstairs to my more appropriate 19" LCD.

Laptops definitely have hibernate functionality. Close the lid and -wait- for the light to pulse. It is then save to remove both power and battery. The computer will resume from safe sleep after power is restored and the computer is awakened.

For the Mini, you might like: http://www.axoniclabs.com/DeepSleep/ - You need to change the sleep/hibernation functionality via Terminal to enable Safe Sleep (command is on the DeepSleep page), and from there you can use the widget to trigger the sleep state of your choice.

I don't find it hateful to use the 52" TV for a monitor from the sofa about 9' distant. Apple BT keyboard fits nicely on the lap and the magic mouse works well enough on the sofa. Thinking about installing the logitech trackpad software on the ipod touch but the magic mouse does well enough for scrolling. I do change browser text size with CMD + "+" and occasionally use accessibility CMD + mouse scroll to zoom in. Also use spotlight as an app launcher / document finder; rarely use the mouse for basic navigation.

You should get BetterTouchTool to use with your magic mouse, then you can set it up so that when you pinch on your magic mouse it zooms in (same way as it works on the iPhone).. personally I think it rocks like that, and helps me use my HDTV for smaller text reading

edit: some of the other things i set up Better TouchT to do with the magic mouse is 3 finger tap to bring up expose, two finger swipe to hide all windows, two finger scrolls to fast forward, etc.. cool program and its free

They hibernate if you let the battery run down. Everyone knows this.

Yes, it's called "deep sleep" or something.

e.g., my laptop has no battery but if I put close the lid (or otherwise put it to sleep) I can unplug it and when I power it back up it will restore everything from a deep sleep.
