Can anything be done about glossy screens? Anti-glare filter?

My last two notebooks have had glossy screens and it is unbelievably annoying. I can't believe some people once paid extra for them. Before I move on to my third and start getting fingerprints on it, I'd like to know if something can be done about it.

I've seen "glare filters" for iPhones and such, but how well do they work? Can I use it outside (not direct sunlight, of course)? Are they hard to apply correctly? Can I get them sized perfectly for the Alienware m11x's 11.6" screen or the original Acer Aspire One's 8.9" one?

Thanks.

i have one on the iphone - it is brilliantly good. but it dulls the vibrance a good bit. i also have a glossy one on the other iphone(s) and ipod touch(s). (they make good remotes) and that is mostly to keep the grimy toddler sticky hands off the main unit.

glossy screens are just uncoated matte - so you pay a price.

The 2730p/2740p come with an outdoors option as do many tablets - the screens are very useful in direct sunlight

Wait, so you're gonna buy a new one with a glossy screen? You realize that you can buy notebooks without a glossy screen, right? Maybe I'm not reading your post right.

Right . . . why do you keep buying glossy screens? Once you have one, the filter is your only option if you prefer matte. You can also get a folding hood for it.

Show me an alternative to the Alienware m11x that fits in my motorcycle tank bag and matches the specs. 🙂

Thanks. Do you have any recommendations?

Ad for "why," obviously, gloss vs. matte isn't the only factor affecting purchase decisions. For example, I got a steal on an Acer Core Duo notebook with discrete x1800 back in 2006. My 8.9" Acer Aspire one was a Black Friday special in 2008. The Alienware m11x I plan to get it the only gaming PC I can fit in my motorcycle tank bag. None of the deals had matte options, nor does the m11x.
