can anyone tell me what's wrong with my psu?

Hi,

i have a P4-2.8E, pc3200 ram(2x256), radeon 9800p.

i didn't overclock any parts of this system..
but my Asus Probe v2.22.06 tells me that the cpu is at 47C/47(motherboard temp) (both temp are idle, when it is loaded, it will get as hot as 60C)

this can really hot!!! even warmming up my room...

I don't think it is suppose to be this hot.
i remember i can get as low as 31C


one thing i am really concerned, the psu is getting very very hot.!! people tell me prescott does drain more power.., ya this i understand, but suppose to be hot... actually the air pull out from the psu is warm too... too bad i don't know a way to test the temp of the psu, i can only feel it by my hands.

so is there something i need to set in bios or winxp to get my psu running cooler... otherwise i may need to switch a psu...
oh ya, i've tried to use a 300w psu , the result is the psu can never be turned on again. I guess it is fried.

I have 1 cdrw drive, 6 fans(5 80mm fans, 1 harddrive fan)
using zalman 7000cu
vga silencer rev2
Coolermaster Centurion Alluminum case

any idea why it gets enormously hot?

but now it is getting extremely hot, it actually heat up the room.
 
The Prescott not only draws an absurd amount of juice from the PSU, it also puts out more heat than an industrial kettle. That's the reason it's hot- 60C for a Prescott is about normal.
Sell the thing and get a decent Northwood-based chip. Unless you overclock it, the performance you get from a Prescott is a bit lower than an equivalently-clocked Northwood.

Oh, and 47C at idle is pretty damned good for a Prescott.
 
I have a NorthWood, so I don't know about the temps of a Prescott. But I have the same mobo as you and I use ASUS Probe as well. And my idle temps are 34/37 and load is 42/48. So your temperatures are pretty high. I would suggest you take off the Zalman heatsink, clean the thermal paste, reapply it, and then put the Zalman back on. Clean your case, change any filters and make sure the cables are neatly tucked away, not impeding the air flow inside your case.

One more thing, use the Q-fan control in the bios. It's in Power->Harware Monitor. Use the second-last or the last setting. Let's see if this helps.

i have a zalman 7000cu hsf, the fan is max at 2500rpm.
so ...

actually is there a "sensor" on the motherboard for temp?
or is it a calculation from motherboard? so it calculate the temp not actually "feeling" the temp.
 
There's a sensor on the motherboard somewhere, it differs from motherboard to motherboard.
However, if you're concerned about the CPU temperature, then it's reading the on-chip thermal diode, which is embedded inside the CPU.

Honestly, those temperatures are fine for a Prescott. If you're not happy, get rid of it and get a cooler Northwood varient.
 
now i want to get a northwood, but who will get a E from me ne??

anyways, i've tried to reapply arctic silver, but the time i tried to remove the old thermal compound(same arctiv silver), it is dry. so is it normal? should i keep it like grease condition all the time...?? may be the heat has dry the grease out..

my girl doesn't like the heat pumping out of the case... it is hot enough in the room, and now the heat from the case is making it even worst...
