Can anyone tell me if my parts will work together?

I'd pick up a 770/870 motherboard with amd chipset (or 880g if u want onboard)

I'd keep the 6850 choice. The Asus 6850 is best choice as runs 30-40% cooler.

The x6's o/c better.

I wouldn't change much

You can build your own 🙂.

Athlon II X4 640 $100

Mobo $100

(Or try to find a combo)

4GB DDR3 $56

Antec 300 $60

GTX 460 $180. You'll probably be able to find a cheaper GTX460, just keep an eye out in the hot deals section.

If you're going to buy this machine soon though, I'd hop on this 5850 for $175 AR.

Corsair CX500 PSU $60 ($50 AR)

Samsung F3 1TB $70

This puts you at $626 without Win7. (~$750ish with). Also leaves you with room in the budget for
1) SSD
2) Propus -> 955 BE (+$50)
3) GTX460 -> 6870 (+$60)
4) A bigger monitor (+$130)

If it were up to me, I'd opt for the bigger monitor. Your current resolution is pretty low and could use a nice bump up. Dirt cheap 24'' too.

If you've never built your own, it's a great time to start! I'm sure you'll get more than enough help if you ask around here. Of course, if you live in anywhere taxable by Newegg, try finding the same parts on Amazon or something 🙂.

Just to let everyone know, I updated the first post after the previous two replies, so please don't think I was ignoring their suggestions!

Let's pretend that you didn't put a Raidmax in there. Go with Donut's 500CX suggestion instead. Also, there really isn't any reason to go with a hex core for gaming. This 955 BE + GA-870-UD3 combo saves you $50. The WD Blue drive isn't that great. If you don't need the space, you'd be better off with this Samsung F4 320GB.

Alright, thanks, will update! But can I ask why I don't need a hex core for gaming? It seems like the more the better.

Also, is that video card okay? I was going to go for an Ati Radeon HD 5850, but didn't see it there. Is the Sapphire better or worse? And also, is the RAM alright? It seems kinda weird to me.

Sorry for badgering you all with questions.

^ Most games still only make use of 1-2 cores properly, although some benefit from 3-4 cores. So what are the extra cores on a hex-core going to be doing while you are gaming, other than consuming power/generating heat? The money spent on a hex-core would be better off going towards a faster quad (+graphics card).

Sapphire's Radeon HD5850 is pretty much the same as all the 5850s out there, unless you are looking at one with a custom cooler. ATI/AMD use partners to package, market and get their cards to retail, so it's unlikely you will see a solely "Ati-branded" card at retail (review samples may vary 😉 ).

No problem at all! That's why we post here. 🙂

Betasub is right on about the CPU. All else being equal, more cores are better. The problem is, all else (namely, price!) isn't equal, and it's not really worth it for a 6-core at this point when you're primarily interested in gaming.

As for the GPU, AMD (they killed the ATI brand last month) just makes the 6850 chip itself. Their partners (Sapphire, et al.) buy the chip and build the PCB, package the card, and support it.

For some cards you will here the term "reference design" tossed about. This is basically where AMD or Nvidia has built the entire card and their partners just label, resell, and support it. AFAIK, there are no reference 6850's for sale.

Alright, so it's decided that I'm going to review the parts next Tuesday (12/14) with my parent who knows nothing about computers (xd) and most likely going to buy them all. Can anyone PLEASE tell me if there's anything I'm missing?

This is what I will be purchasing:
[x] Case
[x] Power Supply
[x] Motherboard
[x] Processor
[x] Hard Drive
[x] RAM
[x] Video Card

This is what I'm going to be putting in:
[x] Ethernet Card (from previous desktop)
[x] CD Drive (if I can figure out how to get it out of my last case)

Am I going to need any extra fans? As far as I know, the case and video card each come with their own. I've never built a computer before in my life, so it's going to be a difficult project and I can almost guarantee I'm going to do something wrong. Anyone know the chances of me breaking everything in the process? D:

It looks like you have everything, though I would probably just fork over the $20 for a brand new SATA DVD-RW. There's also no point in getting the NIC from your old computer as your mobo has GigE integrated. You shouldn't need to buy any additional fans either.

You could potentially break something during assembly if you're not prepared and careful. So read the mobo manual and take your time!

Alright, then with the exception of one more question, I think I'm ready to order! (But not after I thank you, mfenn, for answering the majority of my questions as well as those of almost every other topic poster I see! 😀)

I changed my RAM to this because I like the brand more (it seemed more trustworthy than what I previously had for only a few dollars more) and also it has a heat-sink. I think I read somewhere about RAM functioning strangely if all the memory slots aren't occupied (I believe my motherboard has 3). Is this going to be an issue if I just use this one stick of RAM?

Your mobo has 4 DIMM slots, but a single DIMM will work. I don't recommend it however as you'd be running in single-channel mode and thus losing 1/2 of your memory bandwidth.

With regard to the memory itself, it is 1.5V (which is good), but I wouldn't pay the premium for the brand name and the heatspreader (which does nothing).
