Paper white version if you are EVER going to read in a darkened place. I tried several different attachable lights, all sucked..

Up to you whether you go with the special offers (ie, ads) version or not. The ads are very unobtrusive, basically just show up when the kindle is off.

Don't bother with a cover unless it's for style.

I never tried any of their super expensive readers. Used both the basic Kindle and Paperwhite for several years, Can read on either for hours without any sort of eyestrain.

I have had quite a few Kindles over the years, currently on a Voyage. The Paperwhite is probably the best version for most people, you're well into diminishing returns with the Voyage and Oasis.

That said, I want an Oasis. I wanted the first Oasis and now I really want the new one.

Another vote for paperwhite. My GF and I read a fair amount. Probably 20-30 books per year each. That little kindle paper white does exactly what it's supposed to better than anything else we have tried. Even honest to goodness real paper books (it's often lighter than the tomes we read).

I only use a kindle to read so the paperwhite is perfect. Another vote for it.

I upgraded from a really old second or third generation with hardware keyboard to the Voyage around a month ago. I got the version "with offers" since that just means it shows an ad on the lock screen.

The built-in backlighting works very well and it's incredibly light to hold. The high pixel density makes the text very easy to read.

The hardware page-turn buttons are a little finicky on mine, it sometimes jumps +2 pages instead of +1, but other than that it's perfect.

Bare minimum, get the paperwhite. The built in backlight makes a world of difference in day-to-day usability

I myself have a Voyage and like it, but it's hard to say why it'd be worth $80 more than the paperwhite. I like having dedicated page turn buttons that aren't on the screen honestly, and will use it until it breaks most likely.

$120 for the paperwhite is a no brainer though

Paperwhite here as well. I wouldn't mind owning one of the newer, larger ones, but it was ~$80 for this refurb one and it works well. I had older Kindles and Nooks without the light and it's definitely worth it for the light.

Making sure you get the right cover can be a bit of a pain but I've never had any issues with the refurbs and with my last one couldn't even located the 'minor imperfection' listed

I've had horrible luck with Amazon warehouse items. Things I've ordered described as like new were not even average condition. There were visible scratches and clearly abused items. Luckily, Amazon is great about returns and taking the items back. But it's still a hassle and something not worth dealing with IMO.

I guess they must like me more than you :) I've gotten lots of warehouse items from them with no issue. Between my wife and my mom each losing a kindle and a switch to the paperwhite I've bought 6 warehouse kindles without any problems.

I have a voyage and love it. You have to train yourself a little to get the page turn buttons to work reliably, but I'd much rather that than moving my thumb all the time. The paperwhite is definitely the best value, but I wanted something a little nicer.

I don't use a case (they're too bulky) or a screen protector (they don't fit right), but I did buy a cheap microfiber bag from amazon that I carry it around in.

Thanks! I'm going to go with the paper white. Can anyone recommend something that isn't bulky that will protect it in my backpack?

That said I don't use a case. Granted I don't have it in a bag often like you will, but they're surprisingly durable. So any of those cases that give a little extra protection to the screen should be more than enough.

Yeah, I don't use a case, either. It lives in my front backpack pocket most of the time, and has survived travelling just fine. It's not as slippery or fragile as mobile devices that use glass (nearly all smartphones and tablets).

I use the standard case Amazon sells. Pretty slim, looks good, and unlocks the device upon opening. Would recommend.

I agree on the Paperwhite. I still have an older version and the Paperwhite is a huge jump in usability. I like that you can email PDFs to the device for easy reading.

And it doesn’t matter which brick I use? A blackberry one or an apple brick with an android cable will work fine? I’ve never really understood the whole brick cable thing. Some are larger, some smaller, some cables thicker etc.

As everyone has said the paperwhite is a huge leap up from the regular kindle and well worth the price. I now have the Voyage as well but it's just a smaller upgrade for the money. I do use the page turn buttons though and appreciate the flush screen.

The special ads are just fine, they are only there when the kindle is off. And who knows, you might find a good book out of some of them.

I use any brick with a micro usb cable and it's fine.

I have one of those Kindle DX readers with free 3G for life. I haven't used it in years though. I wonder if the 3G still works.
