The kind that contains sulfuric acid with high enough concentration to make "carbon monsters" out of cane sugar has got some kick! Put on a chemical apron, face shield, get ready with a pot (no stainless steel!), pour into drain and place pot over drain hole to deflect the rapid ejaculation of boiling hot liquid! That is extremely dangerous. Not sure if banned in the 'States...

Chemical drain cleaners are bad though. If they don't work and a plumber or YOU have to clean it out physically it's another hazard you have to deal with. Most contain caustic (lye) material that will have its way with skin and if splashed in your eyes you will run around and the neighbors will think you are a zombie...

Try a plunger first.

Get a snake. If you need really caustic compounds to loosen the clog you're probably better off separating the drain pipe after the trap and physically reaming it out. A decent snake is like... maybe $25 at a hardware store. A lot of times you'll find the problem is right there in the trap anyway.

What's clogged? If it's just a sink, then MAYBE a drain cleaner will help. If it's farther down the line, then a snake/auger will be your best option.

If a snake won't work chemicals won't work either. Do yourself a favor and just get a snake. You'll never need chemicals.

Hair can be a problem You SHOULD have a clean-out somewhere near the bathroom where you can run a snake through the line. (it'll be outside the house) That MIGHT fix the problem...but if you have a hair clog in the pipes from the sink/shower to the main sewer line, you might have to remove the trap under the sink and snake from there, and remove the shower drain cover (if it has one) and snake from there too.

I don't like chemical drain cleaners. Too many toxic/hazardous chemicals...BUT, this one is damned efficient for clearing hair/soap clogs:

Just be careful...it's lye-based and can do serious damage to skin/eyes.

This; if it's a simple hair clog in the trap. Sinks and showers/tubs with hair clogs rarely need more than this to clear it. If it's more serious, this will let you know, with very little time and expense; before you start disassembling and snaking pipes.
