Well, i've been lucky enough to have my dad pay car insurance for me till now, but he's been paying ~$2500 with Liberty Mutual to have me insured on our oldest car, a '93 maxima (though I primarily drive the '03 civic sedan..).

Anyhow, i'm (hopefully) buying a beater '93 civic ex coupe, so I can (hopefully) become proficient at driving stick, under the condition that I get my own insurance. Being that i'm in my early 20's, male, and live in NJ, can I expect to pay less than $2.5k/year? I've got no points and already took a defensive driving course to lower the insurance rate a bit...

Can anyone recommend any insurance co's I should look into?

Liberty mutual is who i have. i haven't found anyone else that offers insurance for less.

you may have to go with minimual coverage and a lower tier insurance company.

Heh, with a couple speeding tickets, two people, and two cars (one with comprehensive coverage) on my policy, it's still under $1500. This is in California. $2500 for one person and one car is ridiculous.

yup, after talking with the insurance reps at liberty mutual I feel like i WAS raped...

I found out that, all other factors remaining equal:

1. A 1993 Civic EX coupe costs MORE to insure than our 2003 Civic LX sedan and 2003 Sentra GXE
2. Our 1993 Maxima GXE costs more to insure than our '03 cars
3. If we lower liability insurance on one car, it goes down on all cars
4. My insurance will go up to around $3000 because the car is a coupe, and rated "higher" in their systems, and it will go up to *around* $3500 if I have my own policy number. Getting their lowest insurance with no frills would cost me somewhere around $2500 on my own.

Ummm....wtf? Pay $2.5k/year for a $3k car? I think NOT.

One question though...WHY THE HELL DOES IT COST SO FRICKIN MUCH TO INSURE A CAR IN JERSEY!?! Ugh... :(

I'm assuming you're young and single here.

based on the above assumptions, it'ld be expensive for you to get insurance ANYWHERE.
