Can anyone provide an intuitive explanation behind moments (mathematics)?

In all the math courses I've taken, I've never quite understood the logic behind them. For all I know, only the first (mean) and second (variance) moments are pertinent. Anyone want to provide a better explanation of moments?

Samesies. What math are you in where you're doing moments? I did moments in Statics...
