My friends Tbird is running hot. I'm just looking for AMD's official word on the maximum temerature fo this cpu. It is running at 72C celcius, which strikes me as a bit high

Yikes, Dude if 72 is the temp the BIOS shows then he is very hot indeed. Figure it to be at least 6c low up to 12c low or more!! Even if that was the correct temp, thats no good. He wants the Bios to show under 50c if possible.

Ok, here are his stats.

He is running a generic case, with a generic 300W PSU.
I think his mobo is a Soltek.

He is using no thermal paste (I am going to send him some), just the patch of crud that comes default with the cpu. His Heat sink is a Chrome Orb, (which I suspect may not be fitted ideally). He doesn?t want to take the side panels of his case.

I think a Globalwin Fop 32 or 38 (damn noisy beast) may be a good investment for him.

The main reason I asked the question was because I had seen people talking about 90C being an ok temperature to run at, because they had seen it on the AMD site. It struck me that this was more likely to be an absolute maximum (under extreme condition, for short times), rather than an acceptable temperature to idle at.

Well, in that case, the C-orb could still work okay... Get some grease on it, and increase case cooling and he should be okay.

72C!! dang my system crashed @ 68C when my heatsink was fitted improperly...

For about 15 bucks more you can get the cgk instead of the cek733.

the cek733 works fine, but it gets a little hot on my duron 900 @ 1.75v (49c max)

Damn.. I got a 900 mhz Tbird.. and it's pretty hot at 59c.. A7V.. that's what the asus pc probe is reporting. I heard that the socket a boards report higher temps than actual. I have no stability problems however. I'm using the generic peice of crap heatsink/fan that's on there.. and my case has next to no cooling. Soon to change though, I want the FOP 38.. looks nice.. I don't know if it'll fit though, I'll find out though.

Smp, the Fop 38 fits fine on the A7V. It's a bit loud though, sounds like a hairdryer. (fop 32 is same HS with a quieter, and lower cfm fan, but does well) More importantly, the Asus probe usually reports temps lower than actual. Get a couple of case fans, the HS cannot lower the CPU to a lower temp than the case ambient.

Just a point on the AMD temps. The 90c temp is NOT the temp that the TBIRD quits working. 90c is pretty much the destruction temp. Most BIRDS will give erorrs when the temps reach 60c.
