Can anyone install a TV mount?

I'm not a craftsman of any sorts. Think i'm going to attempt installing a mount on my wall then putting my TV up there. Makes me miiiiighty nervous. I don't have a stud finder either but I measured them 24" apart. I can feel where they are by tapping.

It would be very sad if my new 42" LED feel down and broke 🙁

Call someone more able or attempt it myself? And don't answer based on you wanting to see pics of my TV broken.

Call if you aren't sure.

Mounting it is the easy party. Go buy a $5 stud finder and follow directions. The PITA is hiding your wires. And please don't tell me you aren't going to have a cable box or satellite receiver.

Buy a stud detector. They're cheap, they work, and they last forever. The alternative is too many holes or a fallen TV. TV is bad for you anyway.

Honestly it is stupid easy. You well know if you hit a stud by the resistance you feel screwing in.

I will say a stud finder is useful and rather cheap.

It's easy to do, the problem is that handling a big TV is really awkward. Basically 4 huge lag bolts into the studs, if there's holes for more, use them. Put as many as it lets you. Ensure there's no electrical that passes through the studs, though at that hight it's probably unlikely.

My guess is that big TV mounts come in two pieces, the piece that goes on the wall and the piece that goes on the TV then it probably just hooks on, then a screw to make it stay, so it may actually not be that awkward if that's how they work. I never did one myself, but I did do a small monitor. I imagine a TV is similar just bigger.

All self-respecting men have a stud finder.

Use it and there should be mo issues. I hung 42" and 32" LCDs all by myself 5 years ago and they are still solid.

Its easy but you might run into an issue like I did when I tried mounting my 19" tv next to my tread mill.

I had 3 stud finders and I drilled 3 sets of holes, each time something went wrong. First time I was right in between the studs the top hole shows no stud to screw into, bottom, stud found.

Then I moved it a inch up redrilled with a smaller 3/16 bit and screwed the top in no problems, bottom screwed in but the hole was off a bit. I am like ugh and then the screw head stripped. Reason, when I measured the holes the pilot hole went in cross, i wasnt level on the pilot hole.

Anyway later I reput it in the final place. Third stud finder with an 1 1/2" depth finder, once again top hole no stud, even though i checked vertical and horizontal for studs. Bottom had a stud. Finally I gave up, put a bigger hole in, shoved a drywall anchor and screwed the top one in, bottom is in a stud, it holds..

Let me show you the picture.

Right side holes. Top hole - second try on same stud, top went in fine. Second hole fro top - first hole that had no stud (not stud right above it). Third hole, cross threaded hole for the second try. Bottom hole, original try bottom screw point. In between is a nail in the dry wall..

42" lcd/ thing is light as a feather, talk 50"+ and you can say its harder..

not much weight on the wall either so no big deal. as said, 10 dollar stud finder, go buy it. lag bolt going through dry wall is going to feel a whole lot different than when it is going into a stud. you screw the bracket arms on the tv, the wall bracket to the wall, lift it up, and drop it into place

easier than lining up one of those blind nail holes you see on the back of cheap wall clocks...thats for sure.

um if you found a stud for the bottom you should find the same stud for the top?

ive used stud finders for years. OK on thin drywall, SUCKS on anything else. thing is, on thin drywall, a good tap tap tap does just as well and doesnt require batteries

to find studs, just knock on the wall and listen. once you think you hear one, run a drywall screw into the wall (because its easy) and you will know at that point if a stud is there or not.

and key note- if hanging a tv directly above an electrical outlet, be extra careful. hit the screw in the middle of the stud or risk shorting out the electrical wire in side the wall.

wirednuts: this townhouse is crazy, the builders really did some weird shit back in teh day, since it does not follow any known things. Seriously why would a stud suddenly disappear. I checked it with 3 different stud finders and marked it to get an exact stud location and it still was weird.

All self-respecting men have a stud finder.

Indeed. Also, once you get a stud finder, you have to move it wide left to right, making a steady beeping noise once it crosses your chest. You're not self-respecting if you don't do this with a stud finder at least 3 times in your life.

i can do it/have done it
i don't trust 'stud finders' or 'tapping'
i use a small nail to punch a bunch of holes to make really sure exactly where the stud is

if you have super strong magnets like those from dead hard drives, you can easily find the stud and screws they used to hang the drywall

Simple as pie...I've done 4 with the biggest being a 60" plasma, running the cables in the wall is super easy too, paying someone to do it is silly
