Can Anyone ID this motherboard?

Ok, my friend has a Compaq 5000US and the motherboard on it died not too long ago. He wants to get a replacement mobo, but he wants the same type as was originally in the computer because he doesn't wanna lose the data on the hard drive and a different mobo would require a format. Is there any way to find the motherboard online?

The Compaq Presario 5000 (5WV) line uses the UWAVE/Compaq part# 217155-002, which is an OEM version of the FIC AZ31. It uses the VIA KT133/686A chipset and is a standard mATX board in a standard mATX chassis. Any mATX board will work and you needn't format the HDD just to swap mobos, if you know what you're doing.

Whether we're talking about the same 'Compaq 5000', I don't know.

Very true statement there.

I was in sales back when the Compaq 5000-series came onto the shelves. They are standard mATX motherboards and he would be better off removing the Compaq mobo and putting just a standard KT133 mATX motherboard in its place.

The only potential problem is that the I/O plate on the Compaq chassis might deviate somewhat from standard. If so, no big thang. Its just a thin metal plate. It can be removed and altered to fit any mainboard I/O bracket configuration. It may not look like a 'factory' job after you're done drilling or cutting on the metal plate, but I'd rather have that MSI KM2M Combo-L than worry about what the I/O backplate looks like.

Well, also take note that many motherboards are now including their own backplate so that might not be a problem at all. The other potential problem could be the PSU being non-standard. I have run into several systems that use their own PSU connectors on the motherboard. If his board has a non-standard connection, then he/she may need to buy a new powersupply to fit on the new motherboard. This might be a problem as well finding a PSU that fits where Compaq placed their PSU. I am NOT familiar with this system, so I am just simply speculating on potential problems.

Yea, i finally found a picture of it. That's what he was worried about the most, and i wasnt 100% on whether it would need a format with a different type of mATX board. I appreciate the help on finding out the type of motherboard (and a good potential replacement, for that matter). Thanks, guys.
