can anyone here use nunchukus effectively?

If so, how long did it take you to learn to use them, what kind do you have, and how effective would they be in real life in defending yourself?

I would smack myself in the head with one of those. I prefer a more civilized method of defense, 9 mm. 🙂

<< effectively? I could hit someone really hard with them, if that's what you're driving at. >>

would you then know how to get it back without breaking your forehead open in the process?
and plz, enough with the gun jokes 🙁

Actually, getting reasonably good with nunchaku is easier than you probably think. Mastering them is damned hard though ( and something i can't claim to have done). Hower i liken martial arts weapons to golf. Anyone can play around and get pretty good but if you are serious get proper training. It you develop bad habits you will never get rid of them otherwise

have a look here

damocles: thanks for the (first) thought out response. i have the link, and was just looking for further knowledge about them. did you ever have to use nunchukus to defend yourself? would they be effective in that sense?

I'm pretty decent with a pair in my right hand & have been told by some that I'm rather fast . Just for show though , never attacked anyone with them 🙂

Always machine my own out of either Nylon or Delrin . My first pair I made out of 2x2 square pine & rounded them using a hand grinder with sanding pad **LOL** Took me awhile that way & were really too light but learned with those rather quickly 🙂

Nope. Never really carried them with me anywhere.I was pretty good ( could use two pairs etc) but to be honest they really wouldn't be my first choice as a melee weapon. I would prefer a 3' lenth of stick or a bokken.

When you first start out using them be prepared for a few weird moments when you 'slighly' lose control and know that you can't just stop or you will dong yourself

My understanding is that they are illegal to carry in most places (like daggers/double edged knives or ASP batons) as they are weapons (vs single edged knives which may be considered tools).

In the hands of a skilled practitioner they can crack skulls and kill (Same with ASP batons, which are the collapsible rigid steel batons with a weighted end which are only available to law enforcement. Different from the cheap whippy, flexible collapsible batons).

i don't have the skills or tools to make my own, but that must've been a fun project for you 🙂

defense isn't the first priority for me, I would just like to knowhow to use them. Just making sure they can do ANYTHING to help defend myself. plus, there's an advantage that if the enemy should grab a hold your your weapon, he wouldn't know how to use it 😀

wooden nunchukus are illegal in California, Massachusetts, New York, and Canada (where I currently reside), and you're right, if used properly they can crack a mans skull. However, you can still purchase foam nunchukus and plastic ones, which I shall be doing shortly

A martial arts buddy of mine has 4 pairs of nunchukus *he don't need em to kick my ass*.

1 is a foam one he got as a kid as he watched bruce lee movies.
1 is plastic and is what he practices new moves with since they don't hurt as much as the other ones
1 is aluminum and makes these bad-ass sounds when he starts hitting his target dummy with em.
1 is made of this carbon fiber crap and weighted with lead ends. He says he'll be reaching for these if someone breaks into his house.
