I dont know about any walkthroughs, but I would recommend some reading. Mastering Windows 2000 Server by Mark Minasi (I believe the 4th edition is the newest) has a HUGE section on Win2k DNS.

It is one of the most complete Win2k DNS guides I've seen, and it makes the price of the book (about 50 bucks) worth it, even if you dont read anything else (but you should, since the rest of the book is as equally kick-ass).

Even if you dont want to shell out for the book, just read through it in the bookstore--you'll get a lot of good info.

the wizards will do most of the work for you. you just need to decide what type of dns server you want - active directory integrated or not. when you make your forward lookup zone, let the wizard automagically make your reverse lookup zone for you. it's really that easy.

1st- Goto properties of My Computer -> Network Identification tab -> properties. Click on 'More". In DNS Suffix box type the name of your domain. ie- somethingdom.whatever.com. Reboot.

2nd- Add remove programs- add/remove windows components- networking services- select DNS.

3rd- Click DNS from Admin Tools. Highlight server name- click action- configure server. Select 1st dns server (if its the first)
select Yes create forward lookup zone- standar primary. On zone name page type- somethingdom.whatever.com. Select create a new file with this file name.
Do the same when it asks to do a reverse lookup zone. Under network ID type 192.168.0- create new file name, etc.

4th- change your tcp/ip properties so your Preferred DNS Server is 192.168.0.1

5th- Go back to dns screen. expand forward lookup zone. CLICK ONCE on your domain. Then right click it-> properties. In the allow dynamic updates list click Yes.
Do same for Reverse lookup zone (192.168.0.x subnet properties)

If you install Active Directory later then you can make them integraded zones with secure updates. Those settings are both on the properties page of the respected zones.

-edit- After your done it can take a few minutes for things to take. Be sure to close all your windows when your done- walk away and get some coffee- and come back and open DNS back up.

Okay thanks for your info guys. I setup my forward and reverse zones but the dns server doesn't seem to wanna work. Btw I don't give it just an internal ip I give it one of my DSL ip's. Then when I goto tcpi/ip and put that ip in for preffered dns server it doesn't work! Hum.. Maybe I Have to use 2 ip's 1 for the pc and another for the dns server since then they won't be the same ip will it work then? I'm going to go try. One more thing My server is currently in a workgroup not a domain will that effect it in anyway?

what exactely are you trying to do?

Don't put in the DNS of you isp.
The reason you set up DNS on your server is to serve clients on your network, not the isp.

You should have two nics in your box. One to the internet and one for your lan. The lan card should have a static ip like 192.168.0.1. You set up your DNS with this number and also DCHP.
If you need internet connections for your lan side you also need to install routing and remote access or internet connection sharing.

And there's no reason for you to set up DNS if you are using your server in a peer to peer network, basically making it a client machine.

Are they registered sites? Whatever the answer I don't think you need a DNS server for what you want to do. Is this going to be for personal or business use?
